Roopkund Early July 2007

Hi

I am planning to do Roopkund in early July 2007. Is that a good time to go?

Could you guide me on the following:

1. Route (where to pitch camp, warnings etc)
2. Guides and porters (where do I get them)
3. Where do you pick up equipment (the nearest place. Not Delhi, where I have to spend on rent unnecessarily).

Regards

Arjun

I suggest that you choose your time acording to weather. There is heavy snow accumulation upthere and if any disturbance in weather happends due to start of monsoons then you will find trapped.

SAFE: After monsoons- plan it in late August or September this when flowers blooms !!

You need all equipment and a guide. You can have equipment from NEHRU INSTITUTE but I do notknow terms.

Dear Everyone

Taking equipment from NIM is not a good idea. NIM is in Uttarkashi and Roopkund is the other end. Can anyone help with equipment.

Almoraboy, boy! what pics on your blog! Though I could not see all (esp from Part 6), I enjoyed them immensly. In fact one of my friends had tears in her eyes when she saw your pics. Are these places really this beautiful?

Thanks for the tip on Guides and porters (and driver). I will surely contact them. Any more practical tips would really help.
Esp about equipment.

And can anyone help with the time of the year? Is July a good time to go? Should I go in June?

Arjun

hi folks,
the problem with those pictures was that i had uploaded them on a separate site and then hotlinked them to my blog. however, one of those photo hosting sites was sold off and all my pics on it were lost. these pics were those of the bedni bugyal trip. i have re-uploaded some of them. i will re-upload the remaining on this weekend (if i stay awake)
u can check some of the enw ones now and the rest of the new ones on saturday/sunday.

also, in village wan, there is a shop known as "bugyal general store"..or something liek that. u can get the equipment from there. also, try to contact the lodge in village lohajung. it is called the panwari lodge or patwari lodge. (damn, i am getting old. can't remember names). from these 2 places u can arrange the tent and sleeping bags, etc. even arrange for porters, etc. they have a weighing machine to weigh ur luggage..coz porters carry a fixed limit. the panwari/patwari/whateverucallit lodge is above the road, on ur right hand side, as u proceed from lohajung village to wan village.
this is a good place to get the equipment from as it is right at the base of the trek.

Dear Almoraboy

Thanks for taking the trouble to post back the pics. They are worth the effort.

I got an idea of the shop by looking at your pic. Now I am formalising my plan and selecting the team members.

With your natural commonsense, what do you think of July as a time to go? Am I going to be slammed by rain? That's the last thing I would want.

This is somewhat news for all of us that equipment is available in WAN. If yes...kindly give details here and if possible, prices and how people can have them on rent.

This can help many many trekkers and camping souls who do not afford high budgets !

tents = yes, we got them from wan
sleeping bags = i guess u can get them from wan. but we had rented them from the lodge (patwari lodge) in lohajung, which is the 2nd last village before wan.
jackets = well, u might. we had bought them with us. u can easily buy jackets in delhi, dehradun, almora, kathgodam, etc. r u asking about the polythene sheetrs they use as raincoats?? if so, yes.

the rates r pretty decent. there were 3 of us and i guess it costed around rs. 250/head for the equipment..which also included some utensils (on rent) and some oil.

i guess u can try the page "contact details" on my blog. i think i have put a phone number of one of the chaps in that area. u can ring up and ask him for the info.

Hi,

I am willing to go for trekking with good companions. But i am very sorry to say that all my friends are freaks. None of them is willing to join me for a trek in uttranchal.

Thus i am in search of some group who is planning to go on trek.

I think it would be better to go on trek in September as the climate would be much more "trekking friendly" than in June - August.

If you wish to take me along please inform me on 09825210203 / 09376310203.
