Trek to Khatling glacier via Kedarnath
Namaste
has anyone been to this trek? how is the terrain? what about doing it in october ? i have been through some books, but all of them mention about a trek from Khatling to Kedarnat. None mentions about a trek from Kedarnath to Khatling. Is there some early morning pass problem at Masar Tal? What about Kedartal trek from Gangotri? how is the terrain? are there some other treks from kedartal? |

I tried this trek in June this year (from khatling side) but failed due to heavy snow conditions..
I could reach only till Masar Tal. Kedarnath - Khatling would be relatively easier.. After the first one and half days of steep climb, you would traveling downhill for the rest of the trek. You may plan to do it in September (it may still be too cold that time).. but October is dicey.. You may have to face heavy snowfall ( I faced very heavy snowfall in June).

Planning to trek Katling Glacier and thereafter Kedarnath Dham in Mid May 06. Help needed - Whether the trek and onword Pass to Kedarnath (Through Marasar Tal/ Vasuki Tal) can be completed without technical equipment and assistance. We ( Four of us) are good trekker ( As good as Pony ) having no technical know how.
The time selected by us is suitable or not? Last edited by vippy : Jun 4th, 2006 at 15:21. Reason: Spell Check |

Hi There
We attempted this route last year on the mid-may. However, the snow condition was not favourable and we needed Ice Axe to make our foot holds and rope is always recommended. As babuchand have mentioned, sep-oct is good. As for the assitance; I think you'll have to have some porters to carry your food stuffs/tents etc as you'll not get any shelter or food on the way. And a guide will make your life on the walk a bit easier and may be less hazardous. You con opt for multitasking folks, i.e. Guide cum cook, cook cum porter, etc Hope this helps Anindya

we tried this trek last June and had to abort it due to very heavy snowfall near Masar Tal. Ice axe and rope definitely needed.

This year the snow condition is favourable I suppose.
Anindya - Could you completed the trek last year? Can you name any Guide cum Cook for the route. ( from ??) Jyoti - even if you aborted the trek in marasar Tal, how was the expereince of the trek, was it worth being up to Marasar tal? Babuchand - Is there any other option for us in May, our criteria for selecting a trek is Good countryside and views of Indian Himalaya. Further any of you are planning for trek this may. |

I'd done this trek in september as well. Lots of snow at that time, but as far as i can recollect there were no steep slopes. A rope and ice axe would be helpful, and so would gaiters.
Do try and get a good guide. You would be probably be the first team to go there this season, so expect to spend some time breaking trail. Also, this means you would need to know the trail very well across the pass and down into kedarnath. We lost our way and got to gaurikund after 2 extra days, 1 of them without food or water .sounds like fun! have a good trip. |

Hi Vippy
We went till Zero Point of Khatling Glacier and few hundred meters beyond. But, as we lost a couple of days to bad weather on the way and we almost ran out of our ration, we did not tried for Masar Taal and returned from Khatling. Also, Jyotipg was on the same trail few days ahed of us and their account did not encouraged us to try it. The guide for our group is not worth recommending, I think Jyotipg can recommend you a guy called Shambhu Rawat from Uttarkashi. |

Hi
We need to be a bit more careful and particular about typing names. Being so casual shows a lack of respect and genuine interest for those subjects. "Khatling Galasior to Kedarnath / Katling Glasior" is certainly not a case of typos and sounds really stupid. Most of our non-Indian members get the Indian names correctly. How can we Indians be so careless about the names of our own places! Mountains don't forgive ignorant visitors! Cheers Joe |

Great write up, I just took half day from my office to read it compeletely. The photographs are again enthralling. Many of the incidents you encounter were same as I experienced in my Milam Glasior Trek in May 2003. By your experience I just decided to go to the trek but surely in Sept./ Oct. as I want to compelete it till Kedarnath. I still have not decided for trek in May this year. again I just want a remote gentle trek as you wrote somewhere in post.
