Trek to Har Ki Dun

Hello.
I need some information on a trek to Har Ki Dun,that me and my friends plan to undertake in May-June 2010.It is important to mention that we are a group of college students without much experience in trekking and Our main interest is photography.
My questions are:

1.Is it possible to travel from Dehradun to Taluka at night by car? Or at least to Sankri by bus?
2. How long does it take to reach Taluka from Dehradun?
3. Considering we are not experienced trekkers how difficult is the trek route from Taluka-osla-HKD? And how long does it ideally take to trek from Taluka-Osla and Osla-HKD?
4. Is the return trek from HKD to Osla and Osla to Taluka easier than the uphill trek?
5. Is there any update available on the recent road conditions?
6. Are ponies available to carry our luggage? what is the rate?

Please reply ASAP.Thank you.

hello sohini, you can't travel at night b'coz traffic remains closed at night there. If the road is ok then it will take you about 10 hrs to reach taluka from d.dun.Taluka to osla will take about 7hrs.Osla to hkd 5 hrs.It does'nt matter how experience you are whats matter is your passion. It's not that tough. You can get pony from taluka or sankri.

Please search the forum for HKD threads--you'll find lots of information. A few replies based on my trek to HKD in May 09.

<SamG> Sure would be possible, but not sure if it would be advisable. Leave early in the morning and you'll enjoy the scenery even more.

2. How long does it take to reach Taluka from Dehradun?
<SamG> Dehradun to Sankri is around 8-10 hours based on the driving speed and breaks. Sankri to Taluka is 2-3 hours by foot and around half an hour (or thereabouts) by jeep.
3. Considering we are not experienced trekkers how difficult is the trek route from Taluka-osla-HKD? And how long does it ideally take to trek from Taluka-Osla and Osla-HKD?
<SamG> Not too difficult for first-time trekkers. It was my first time trek in the Himalaya and we managed pretty well (I am 40 and my female companions were <40) . Taluka to Osla (Seema) is around 5 to 8 hours and Osla (Seema) to HKD is around the same (maybe an hour more). I can't remember exactly now, but one of these legs took a bit more. I found Taluka to Osla to be more tiring.

4. Is the return trek from HKD to Osla and Osla to Taluka easier than the uphill trek?
<SamG> Yes, though downhill might not always be easier than uphill. It's of course less tiring.

5. Is there any update available on the recent road conditions?
<SamG> No update. By road, I believe you mean the road to Sankri. The Sankri-Taluka is a "kaccha", unmetalled road. Sometimes very close to the edge, but an exciting drive.

6. Are ponies available to carry our luggage? what is the rate?
<SamG> I think so, but not sure if they might be locally available. The ones I saw were brought by the camping parties. Unless you are camping out or have a huge amount of baggage, the porter/guide should be able to carry your stuff.
Please reply ASAP.Thank you.
Anywhere in the Himalaya is a photographer's dream and HKD is no exception. Here's the link to some of my HKD photos:

Sohini,

When are u planning for the trip ? Two of us are starting from Dehradun to Sankri on 23rd May 2010. If you people join us for the distance from Ddn to Sankri, then we can hire a taxi. Sharing the fare actually as it is quite high & they are quoting Rs 4000/- - one way.
