Trek to Gangotri-Gaumukh-Tapovan in mid Apr
Hi
I am planning a trek to Gangotri-Gaumukh-Tapovan from Apr 16. I had a few questions, would appreciate any inputs 1. Will the route be open, given that from what i heard, Gangotri is open only from Aug 21st, which is the auspicious Akshaya Thagide day. 2. Can i hire guide/porter in Uttarkashi/Gangotri? I will be going alone, hence would like to have a guide/porter. 3. Any phone numbers or people I can talk to in Gangotri/Bhojwasa area for weather/guide/equipment information? Any information would be a great help. I am looking at leaving from Delhi on Apr 16. thanks! Rajeev |

Hi Rajeev,
I think the route is open when weather permits. I did this trek in May, so the opening can't be August. There are guides in Uttarkashi and Gangotri and even Rishikesh. When I went, we easily found contact #'s by just googling the trek and emailing from home. Then, when in Rishikesh, organized the trip by talking to other pilgrims and trekkers. We ended up joining up with a lone trekker and sharing our guide- the route ends up being easy to see as so many other groups are going. Good luck. Have a great trip. |

Hi
thanks for your reply. Sorry I meant Apr 21st, since that is when the Char Dham yatra apparently opens this year. If there is anyone else intending to trek around that time, do let me know, Thanks! Rajeev |

Up to Gaumukh you are likely to find a stream of travellers/pilgrims. From Gaumukh to Tapavan you will need a guide. You can find them in Gangotri. Do you plan to spend a night in Tapavan?

1.you can get information from Nehru Istitute Of Mountaineering(NIM) in uttarkashi(ph.01374-222123/224663).
2.regarding equipment you need only a sleeping bag which you will get from NIM.There are ashrams in tapovan where you can stay and get food. |

Hi,
Lots of confusion regarding dates. Well the trek can be done without prob during April. Reach Gangotri and there look for a porter cum guide. Carry sleeping bag if you intend to spend night at Tapovan. Call up 01377-222202. This is the number of Ishavayam Ashram and they will be able to help you out about the exact conditions. You are going to be moving on the pligrim trail so don't worry much. Mobile functions upto 7 Kms from Gangotri on the trail. Beyond that no communication. You can have a look of the pics on himalayancamping.com. |
