Trek in the Himalayas
Hi All,
I am new to IndiaMike.com. A friend of mine uses this site regularly and recommened it. Well, a few cousins of mine are coming down from the US in March and are keen to go on a trek in the Himalayas and I am a bit clueless on where to begin. They are looking at a 10 to 14 day trek, moderate - demanding, not excruciating please. So, can anybody suggest trek routes and how do we go about it, please? I know, its a really open-ended question here, since the possibilities are endless but we are open to anything as far as it meets the criteria. Trek period: 2 weeks, at tops Grade: Moderate - Demanding Location: Himalayas Thank you in advance. Cheers, Kamal. |

i suggest you search on IM for report on trekking in uttaranchal a link to which was put on IM by one of the members. However, in the month of March your options would be limited as lot of treks such as Pindari, Milam, Panchkedar etc would be out of bounds. I suggest rather than one continuos trek of 15 days you could look at 2-3 short treks which may still be open in March

Hi, I'm looking for similar advice. My father is coming in May. I can plan a trek, but I was hoping someone here could give me advice about what region to look at. We want to do something in the Himalayas, but I'm not sure what areas have good weather and not too much snow on the ground at that time of year. Can someone recommend a general region to start researching? Thanks a million. This site's information was really helpful last time I was planning.

The Himalayas, as you are aware, range for more than a couple of thousand of kilometers...
Soo, it might be a good idea to pin down to atleast a broad area... As you said March, a major part is safely ruled out, as in Ladakh, Spiti, Kinnaur and the Upper reaches of Garhwal and Kumaon, and also almost all the stretches in Sikkim and the North-east... The lower reaches of Garhwal and Kumaon would be ideal... Even the Kangra and Kullu valleys... If it was even the beginning of April, that would surely be the best time... Some of the passes would have just opened... (You would need to cross check which ones)... Everything is just pristine and virginal... No crowds... All in all - Nature at its beautiful best...! Don't tell anyone but the best time to go on a trek is either the very beginning of the season or right at the end of it...! And in the Himalayas, April is Rhododendron-time... Best to do 2-3 shorter treks - The longer ones are always in the most upper reaches and wouldn't be possible at this time of the year... You could do the Dodital - Darba Pass trek (might need to return from Dodital itself); if lucky, maybe even Pindari Glacier is possible (I once did Pindari in the first week of April), Milam (only after mid-April), shorter treks near Ranikhet, Mukhteshwar, Bageshwar et all... In Kangra, you could do several treks near McLeod Ganj and also near Kullu and Naggar... Choose a broad area and the exact time frame... Will be glad to provide any more inputs... Cheers...! |

Hiya...
Like I mentioned, the route to the Pindari Glacier will most probably be closed till the first week of April... If not, then atleast till the end of March... When I say closed, I refer to the few KMVN guest houses which fall along the trekking route to Pindari - Loharkhet, Dhakuri Top, Khati, Dwali and Phurkia... I assume you would prefer staying at these guest houses as the one-way trek is 2 1/2 days... These guest houses open right at the beginning of the trekking season... Call up the KMVN office on Barakhamba Road in C.P. around the last week of March just to check it out... Earlier than that won't be possible at all as the passes would be covered with snow... McLeodganj / Dharmshala might offer you more options around that time, though the upper reaches here will also be a definite no-no for all amateurs (including me)...! All depends on your trekking experience, acclimatization to the altitude levels and whether you plan to rough it out or take ponies, porters n cooks...! Cheers...! |
