Smile Trek from Gangotri to Nandavan and Tapovan

We are 6 people from bangalore want to do trekking from Aug 15th to 25 August from Gangotri to Nandavan and Tapovan and then visit Badarinath. Please let us know whether this is the correct time to do it and also let us know whether it is easy to go through operators or arrange the things ourselves by hiring local people and tents sleeping bags etc..,

In our group three people have done trekkings last two years one to valley of flowers and hemkund and the other to Gochala (5000m) in Sikkim Himalayan ranges without any problem. Other three members are first time trekkeres. Any specific suggestions for those first time trekkeres.

The period you have mentioned is rainy season. After 25th is the ideal time. This route is not very difficult, you can do it by yourselves also by hiring tents etc. from Uttarkashi. If you have time you can also add Nilatal with this- one day more from Nandanban.

I got quotation for this trek for 14000 per person from one of the travel agency, which includes accomadation at all the places tents, sleeping bags etc., and total travel. Last tiome in 2005 august we visted Hemkund, Valley of Flowers and Badrinath and we felt the month of August is O.K with a reasonable amount of rain. And locals also told us month of August is not heavily rains comared to mid of June and July. So that is why we have decided Aug 15th. Hope every thing goes fine. Do you think that is this a reasonable quotation or is it expensive???

Please tell us about Nilatal, if possible we will see whether we can accomadate it..

This is definitely an exhorbitant price to pay! Dont go with travel agents. You can get equipment, guide and porters from Uttarkashi. Guide rates should be 300-400rs per day and porters should come around 200rs per day. Get equipment on hire. If you need contacts in Uttarkashi i can PM you. Check out other threads on Tapovan/Nandanvan in this forum. You'll find a lot of info and contacts.

Dont miss Neel Tal for any reason if you get to Tapovan. Its a half hour hike from there and the most beautiful lake i have seen. Here is a pic - http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/1...79737989LmKfWs

For acclimatization prepare to spend one full day at Gangotri as its 3000m+.
Prepare well and happy trekking

Hi,
Well I can't say about Nandanvan trek during rainy season and that also crossing the glacier between Tapovan and Nandanvan. The condition of the glacier. If you are first time trekkers not a very good idea. As for Tapovan if you wish you can visit it in a day from Bhojbasa and be back by evening and stay at GMVN which provides beds for Rs 240 last year ( what is the rate this year you can take a look at their site.
You do not have to tie up with any one if you plan to do Tapovan alone and you need not carry tent also. Reach Gangotri and hire a porter for 200-250 a day. pics are at the site for you to see.

Thumbs up Is it me who is misunderstanding??? Or the others???

I think Ravi got the Quotation Rs. 14,000/= which is very reasonable for the trek Gongotri - Gomukh - Tapovan -Nandanvan - Vasukital - Kharapatthar - sweta - Suralaya - Kalindi Pass (19,507') - Rajparao - Arwa Tal - Ghastoli - Mana - Badrinath (13 days Trekking Route) not for the Just beginners trek gomukh-tapovan-nandanvan from UTK Agent. For which of course that would be an exhorbitant price.

And I think His intentionis to cross Kalindi Pass to Badrinath from Gomukh. Not coming back to gongotri and then bus to Badrinath.

If you want to cross the Kalindi Khal then I would suggest start after 25th August. this year the rain arrived a little late. I am just back yesterday from Kalindi Khal (crossed & Climbed Kalindi Peak on 28th June) we were lucky with the weather. the monsoon started the day we arrived Badrinath. Though as mountaineers we didn't have any HAP-Guide. But I think you need Guide & Porters for the same. I had two green horns who had done just some basic trekkings like you before. But remember in KK you have to cross 5947 mtrs. and might need osme experienced heads. For our expedition (climbing the peak too) we needed something around 22,000 Rs. per person.

By the way this is for all the trekkers concerned. We have also done the First Indian Crossing of Panpatia glacier and Col to reach MadMaheswar from Badrinath just before this trekking. We have done a total exploration of the lower & Upper Panpatia Glacier and finally crossed the Panpatia Col on 8th June. We found and named a new Col to reach the Upper Panpatia snowfield instead of climbing the icefall we traced out a new route which is easy & could be donw by novice trekkers too) It is named as Parvati Col after the nearby Parvati Peak. There too we didn't take any help of any Guide - HAP.

17th June a slideshow with press conference will reveal the details in Kolkata (Venue - Bangla Academy . time 17:45)

14k for just Tapovan and Nandanvan is expensive.
But in case you guys plan to kalindi khal, then its pretty good deal.

I am leaving for Kalindi with my own guides and porters(no package tours), it may cost around 17k for me.

Starting from Gangotri on 27th August.

Cheers,
JP

Did you descend to Maindagalla Tal? My map [US Army map avlbl online] shows a pass above Maindagalla Tal. What was the altitude of Parvati Col?

I do not think that going to Tapoban without tents and guide will be a good idea. Tapoban happen to have fog sometimes and with temp. going down and bad weather....I do not think this will be worth taking that risk. You can have someone from GANGOTRI which can show you trail...I am sure.

But going to Tapoban without camping equipment is not a good idea. August is rainy month....
