Trek from Atoli to Padum via Umasi La
Hi,
we plan a trek from Atoli to Padum via Umasi La in october this year. Does anybody know how we arrive Atoli fastly (our first destination in India is Delhi)? It is possible to use a jeep from Udaipur/Killar to Atoli or should we start in Kishtwar? In that case what is the fastest way from Delhi to Kishtwar?
Many thanks in advance for any comments!!

Fastest way from Delhi to Kishwar
1. Flight from Delhi to Jammu OR Srinagar (acc to convenience)
2. Private jeep or SUV from Jammu / Srinagar to Batote on the Jammu Srinagar Highway (NH 1A). Turn into the Chenab valley at Batote. Drive upto Kishtwar and then Atholi.
To the best of my knowledge, there is NO road completed between Kilar and Atholi. The approach to Kilar is by a very bad road. Manali to Rohtang is tolerable... but then onwards, the road is just a dirt track at places. It will take you around eight hours in a very tiring ride. After this, you may have to trek from Kilar to Atholi (two / three days)
People used to go via Manali due to the terrorist situation in Kishtwar. Now that things are quieter, you can go via Kishtwar itself.

The Universe is an ellipsoid?... or a Spheroid?? If the sphere smiles... it becomes an ellipse. This IS Creation.

I've found these vague descriptions from H. Kapadia...

Maybe the Killar-Atholi road is now jeepable... Inconveniences included!

Not Ingolf himself, just a friend of him.
thanks to you and AvidTrekker. We will search through the links for some more informations and decide then, which way will be the best for us.
And by the way, we don't care about inconveniences

Hi,
Is all quite in J & K ? I think it is better to go from Manali. Also according to me moving out of Padum via road is much of a pain.

Than is it ok...
My suggestions: Ride from Manali (via Rothang) or Chamba (via the new Sach pass road) to Killar... start your trek in Killar/Dharwas and explore the Sansari (syn. Lujai, Sural, Dharwas) valley and cross the Dharlangwala jot or Sersank Pass too... Saxons will manage that with a little help from local shepherds!!!

Say a big hello to "dem alten Schweden"!
What a shame they have built a road over the Sach La! I trekked from Chamba over the Sach La and over the Umasi La to Padum about 20 years ago with local shepherds (a goat carried my backpack over the Umasi La) - magical. Sorry I don't have any useful info now about the route.
Still the road from Manali-Udaipur is bettert han the aaproach from Chamba over sach la. Saves you time and saves you energy not to mention money too.
There is now a road from Kishtwar to atoli. Last time i was in Kishtwar the situation was a bit stress: lots of soldiers, curfew at 8pm... But the population was very kind. After this, in the Padar valley (atoli-umasi-padam), you are like in a Märchen...But its take a wild to come from Delhi to Kishtwar by bus...Next time i come in the area i will even though try it by Manali.
