Trek cost $55USD per day...reasonable?

I am trying to determine if I am being overcharged for a trek. I got a bid from Yak n Yeti (have not heard from other agencies yet) at $55 USD per person per day x 10 days [Goecha La and 2 days in Yuksam]. This covers food, porters, guide, tents and gear plus transportation from Bagdogra airport to Yuksam and hotel for 2 nights. So total for 1 person is $440USD or Rs20,900. This seems more expensive than I was expecting...please advise. Thanks

You will not believe that we, a group of 11, had done this trek in October 2008 within 3875 INR per head from Kolkata to Kolkata, a total of 13 days trip.

Considering the facts like better transport, better lodge, very good guide, max number of porters etc. and the number of trekkers is low like 2-4, then it might be costly but not 20900 INR per person. If you are confident enough to arrange all the things by yourself (transportation, hiring lodge, marketing, hiring guide/porter/yak etc.) then you should finish it within 10000 INR to 12000 INR very lavishly.

Hi smblasko,
When are you thinking of doing this trek, as I am interested in something like that when I am in India in Feb.
Can I get some advise from some lurking members about doing a 3-5 day trek in HP in the first or second week of Feb.

supratim: thanks for the quick response. I understand that we will pay a premium to an agency to organize the entire trek for us (porters, yaks, food, etc). What I am wondering is if this specific agency is overcharging or if all agencies are going to charge approximately the same amount ($55 USD per day = 2615 INR per day per person).

Also, I just received a quote from Marco Polo Tours on the same trip (includes hotel and transportation at front and back of trip, etc). The quote was for $1600 USD for 2 people ($1600 = ~76,000 IRN). Wow!

Anyone have any recs on agencies? I have very little experience trekking and am only in India for 2 weeks so I dont have time nor the inclination to organize the entire trip myself. Thanks

I got my trek organised by Barap Bhutia from www.sikkim-holidays.com and found him to be very good and competent. You could get a quote from him for your requirements.
