no they r not suitable for trekking, specially in the snow ......it is made of canvas so it get wet easily and need lots of time to dry ........ is not comfortable at all ...... if u r not used to it, u will certainly get blisters .......and there is no provision for attaching crampons...

There are new breeds of ankle-high boots that are quite light-weight. They use lighter metal in the shanks in the soles, combined with hardier and lighter soles.

Always try to go for a Virbam sole, as they tend to last longer and for some reason just "stickier" when getting some grip.

I tend to use trekking boots everywhere except in the hottest and most humid of climates as they provide not only support but protection.

Happy feet are a happy traveller..

Coming back to the original subject , I tried to find something really useful to give away when on a trek, and stumbled on a battery free flashlight. It uses a magnetic element that is shaken past a coil. By no means impressive output - but hey , no batteries.

Here is a pix . I bought it in my local hardware shop for about Rs 300. I think you`ll find similar by googling "no battery" + flashlight + faraday (it works on the faraday principle ) .
Again, not impressive output - more like finding your way to the loo . I have seen a deluxe solar flashlight on the web somewhere that could run on the internal battery , charged by a small solar panel, or AA´s in a separate chamber. Obviously heavier, more expensive and I´m not too sure about the the lifespan for a battery that gets recharged so often.

One cycle, around 90 movements , is supposed to give up to 2 minutes of light. Haven`t had time to try it out much yet. It did charge walking from my bus stop to my apartment , anyway.
It also generates a magnetic field , strong enough to pick up a AA battery, so it shouldnt be stored next to wallet (credit cards etc.).

Talking Something that glows in the dark...

Vistet, I am totally ignorant abt the marketing business of certain products...

but in this mutual discussion we have accidentally stumbled upon a product with a great money potential.....

"When rubbed it GLOWS ..... in the DARK ...... "

If someone does research and infuses material with properties of "friction activated gradually growing intensity fluorescence" it would NOT only glow, but peak!!!

What Colour? Day GLO Orange?? or Vomit Green???

[quote=AvidTrekker]One thing that most rural people ALL over India, whether in the mountains or in the plains, really value; is a electric-plug-re-chargeable portable mini tube-light lamp. Regular electricity is almost non-existent in India... and almost all rural homes have/NEED this gizmo. Don't buy something from your home Country which cannot be repaired in India (it will be thrown away if it conks off). buy something from the Dehra Doon/Rishikesh/other big town market.

If a porter has made you very happy, this "tip" he will treasure for life! It costs rs 600 to rs 1200. The heavy dangerous ones with liquid acid filled inside cost rs 300 but they could be a health hazard.

So basically cash (rupees) is not a good way of tipping like we do in Europe- what you are saying that they would appreciate something that is bought and given to them??

Smile Re chargeableTorch

What I mentioned was a re-chargeable torch lantern. Re chargeable by normal electricity plug in.

Not foreign made but local made. Not with liquid acid inside but dry chemical compounds. Slightly large torch which can stay alight on a single charge up to three hours or so...and the whole family can have dinner by its light. Many bright students also study by the torch light for their exams.

The locals WILL TREASURE THIS GIFT. REALLY

there are some places in india where these lights are not available in market.... in that context those are good tips. needless to say, some porter / guide will surely find cash more lucrative....after all "money is sweeter than honey"
