Thumbs up Time to try a New Trekking Expedition route ? ( Chandra Valley to Miyar Valley )

Dear All,

Warm Greetings !

For those adventurous hikers who try to
"push the envelope " making a beeline every year for :

> Darcha -Padam - Lamayuru ( Leh / Ladakh Trek )

> & especially those venturing into the Miyar Nallah - Menthosa Region ( Kang La Jot and Urgus Pass respectively )

Try something different from Kang La (Miyar Valley) this trekking season !

Below is an absolutely unfrequented and exciting trekking expedition route through a maze of very large glaciers and the finest peaks of " Central Triangular mass of Lahaul Valley " :
this is simply a brilliant route !

Do not miss out crampons ( "universal ultralite" is recommended )

The expedition begins below the Lahaul Side of Rohtang Pass and ends at Miyar Nallah .

( Guide can be picked from Manali for this route after some research and asking locals @ Old Manali )

Details of how this can be done :

Day 1 ./ We began the hike descending the Rohtang Pass to Khoksar ( 3140 m )( check out the deep-fried Dhaba Parantha here ! )

Across the Chandra River to the Glacier called Kulti .
( Kulti Glacier is the large Glacier seen from the crest of the Rohtang Pass : bang in front towards Lahaul )

It takes a full day trek to reach Kulti Glacier from Khoksar .
Do not underestimate the distance ... it is a minimum of 20 kilometres.

Day 2./ From Kulti Glacier Camp 3900 m ( pitch tent aside the Kulti Nallah which later joins the Chandra River ) see new faces/sides of the Peaks already seen while descending the Rohtang Pass into Lahaul .

Day 3./ Back to Khoksar ( Day 2 is only an acclimatization day )
A trekker ideally should not avoid "Day 2" because the ascent from Khoksar to Tempo La Pass on the main expedition route is a sudden gain of altitude to 16170 feet from Khoksar which is at 10300 feet above sea-level .

Day 4./ Rest Day ( Just conserve your energy levels ! )

Day 5./ Begin very early at crack of dawn .
Khoksar to Tempo La Pass ( 4930 m ) and down to Yoche Nallah
Camp beside Yoche Nallah . Tempo La is very scenic indeed.
Full Day trek over Pass .

Day 6./ We took another rest day . Easy walking to Mulkila Glacier and some of the best "CB Peaks" and many other unnamed peaks . The summits of Koa Rong can be seen but at a far distance . Mount Mulkila (6517 m), Taragiri , Gepanh Goh and M6 are visible.
The newly opened virgin peaks of Himachal ( ref: IMF , Indian Mountaineering Foundation ) are also in this region . There are numerous peaks here without any description anywhere be it the web or Survey of India or Leoman or other reference material ). All Lahaul Peaks appear technical with sharp ridges and cornices and icy gargoyles .

Day 7./ 10 kilometre moderate walk with ups and downs to Yoche Village along the Yoche Nallah .

Day 8./ 12 kilometers walk to Keylong from the village camp .

Day 9./ Rest Day at Keylong ! Enjoy the Lahauli Food and creature comforts .

(Cho-Cho Dhaba Food in Keylong is simply delicious .)

Day 10./ Re-arrange equipment and supplies and board a bus to Darcha on the Keylong - Baralacha Pass Road . Without losing too much time today head off to Palimo which is about 15 kilometers away along the lankar Nallah .

Day 11./ Many Stream crossings to Zanskar Sumdo 12 kilometres away .

( * This is the same Zanskar Sumdo Camp like on the Shingo La pass route to Padam in Zanskar Valley ! *)

DO NOT LEAVE THE MAIN " LANKAR NALAH " STREAM .
GUIDE SHOULD BE CAREFUL NOT TO FOLLOW THE TRIBUTARY AS IT TAKES YOU TOWARDS SHINGO LA ... WHERE WE DO NOT WANT TO GO !

Day 12./ From Zanskar Sumdo trek 7-8 hours to find a suitable place along the Nallah . No fixed camping site . It is your prerogative when you want to end the day's hike and where you want to pitch camp .

Day 13./ Tough Day : Full day trek over the 17600 feet high
Tarasalamu Pass ( 5358 m ) to camp on the other side of the pass . The area is absolutely remote and in extreme isolation .

The Tarasalamu Pass is the only well-marked route ( Yak Route )
from Chandra Valley in Central Lahaul to Western Lahaul bordering Pangi Valley .

The pass is not outstanding in difficulty but the trek is extremely stiff due to narrow track between boulders .
Yaks and big goats also manage over this route .

Day 14./ Full day descent along track to touch the noisy banks of Miyar Nallah . Camp at Miyar Nallah .

Day 15./ The village of Khanjar ( Miyar Valley ) is another 6 hours easy trek .

Day 16./ Trek down the Miyar Valley to Karpat or try to reach Chamrat by extending your hours of walking .

Day 17./ Hit the road head at Miyar Nallah - Chenab River
" Sangam " or confluence on the Lahaul -Pangi Road .

The fascinating hiking expedition finishes here at the road-head!
Head back to Manali by Jeep .
