yes, u can go to kathgodam by night bus from anand vihar isbt in delhi.

then, hire a private taxi from kathgodam. or, if u r lucky, the shared jeeps might not have started...they leave pretty early though.

for driver details...check here: http://almoraboy.blogspot.com/2006/0...formation.html

the latest news (4th May 2007) is that the route to Milam is blocked due to heavy snow at Bugudiar. Even the seasonal migratory people returned to Munsiary as they could not make it to upper villages. For atleast another week, the route will not be cleared. these days it's raining everyday in this region. hail storms too. that means the upper ranges are receiving snowfall.
ashutosh, it's good that you changed your plans. Even the route to pindari will ne blocked, I guess. So check it out.

ks_bluechip, I think by the time you start your trek, the weather should be OK and the road will be cleared. But be prepared to face the chill in Milam. expect snow fall also.

If you refer to my previous posts, It was at bogudiar, I was expecting a problem. Now the forecast seems to have come true

Milam --- Here I come

Hello Everyone,

After reading up Jeroen's post(2004) and after irritating so many of you all on PM regarding the trip, finally here is my Milam trek plan.

7th May - Leave Mumbai at 4.30PM
8th May - Arrive in Delhi by 10 AM, Train to Kathgodam at 10 PM from Old Delhi Stn.
9th May - Early Morning at Kathgodam , bus from there to Almora.
I am buying/ Renting(if possible) Snowboots Almora. Same afternoon i ll take a jeep to Munsiyari. I ll put up at Hansling lodge.
10th May - Start preparing for the trek. Get in touch with KMVN rest center (Someone posted on 4th of may that its raining there, i tried calling Hansling, cant reach that no)
11th May - start trek at 7 AM with or without a porter. Munsiyari to lilam(5hrs)
12th May - Lilam to Bodgudiyar (6hrs), stay in PWD guesthouse
13th May - Bodgudiyar to Rilkot to Martoli (6hrs?), Lunch at Rilkot at the 2nd dhabba on my way, Post lunch head to Martoli
14th May - Stay in martoli
15th May - Martoli to Burfu (??)
16th May - burfu to Nanda devi base camp
17th May - Nanda devi base camp to Milam village (Stay at deepu's gueshouse)
18th May - Milam To Milam Glacier to Milam lake if possible, stay at Milam
19th May - Early morning back to Bodgudiyar
20th May - Bodgudiyar to Munsiyari
21st May - Left one day if something goes wrong.
22nd May - Leave Munsiyari to Kathgodam (8.40PM train to Delhi)
23rd May - Afternoon flight to Goa.(My leave is till 27th so i ll get to mumbai only on 27th night, lol)

So thats the plan people. Thanx to everyone on this forum for taking time replying to my PMs. I have finally decided not to take my guitar. I would like to take a porter if thats cheap (150 a day). I will leave copy of Maps at Hansling.

NOW THE PROBLEMS

On 5th of May, Almoraboy - its Raining there!!!
On 5t of May ,Rajkumar - The Route is blocked!!!

What will happen on 11th of may when I m starting my trek, God knows, but I know that ashutosh is couple days ahead of me… and sir srinivasan (KS_Bluechip) is behind me with Debu, I am no longer worried. It will be a great pleasure to meet both of you guys on my Trail somewhere.

@ KS_Bluechip:
Sir, your blog was excellent. You have some of the best pictures ever taken on the mountains. Good Job
@ Ashutosh: You must be on your way to Delhi from Mumbai. All the best man. I hope it doesn’t rain and your trek is a great success. You are worried about the trains and I am worried about the rains. Together we shall conquer Milam. Lol
@ Almoraboy: Baba I ll check my mail at Delhi on 8th, please update us on whats happening coz ashutosh might not get a chance to Revert.
@ Rajkumar: I haven’t spoken to you before but please guide us through our journey. Thank you so much.

If the whether is too bad and I cant move ahead, I ll wait at Hansling and start by 13th or 14th of May. May hire a porter. All my journey tickets are booked. I am on waiting list from delhi to Kathgodam, but what the hell… I m an Indian n to be more specific I stay in Mumbai and travel in local trains in the rush hour. I will get to Munsiyari anyhow. Problem starts when rain starts… I don’t like rain while I m walking…

So hopefully everything goes well. Please reply with your valuable comments.

9th may--- if u leave almora in the afternoon, it is very difficult to reach munsyari before nigthfall. in fact, i don't think u would be able to reach munsyari at all. so u can stay at chaukori and then go to munsyari the next day.

11th and 12th may -- u can do munsyari to bougudiyar in 1 day, via lilam. so u can save 1 day extra for nanda devi base camp.

15 & 16 may -- why r u going to nanda devi base camp via burfu? i have not been to nanda devi base camp, but it is on the true right side of gori ganga. burfu is on the true left side of gori ganga. martoli & pacchu r also on the true right side of gori ganga. so u can head for the base camp via martoli or via pacchu and come back to these places. u will need to pass burfu while going to milam, not nanda dev.

u need tents only for the nanda devi base camp leg. for other places, u can stay with any of the local villagers. so tents r not needed.

almoraboy, I am in Hyderabd only. I was reading Dainik jagran news paper from where I gathered that news that the route to Milam is blocked and will be cleared only after a week.
feelfree82, It seems you have leave till 27th. Can you postpone your return journey a few days? If your onward journey tickets are booked, leave as per the plan. from kathgodam to delhi there are number of buses.
In case you have to wait in munsiary few days, go for short day walks. It's never boring in the mountains, you know
By 14th, the route should be clear your. But in case you have postponed your return trip, start your trek as late as posssible.
And on the way back from Milam, you alloted 2 days. That will be a bit of strain, I guess. But I am not aware of your fitness levels and prior experience. I suggest 3 days.
I think Asutosh is not going to milam. He is going to do pindari and from there he wants to trek all the way to Munsiary leisurely. Even he may be facing problems on his due to snow fall.
safe journeys and happy trekking

Good to know Asutosh has changed his plans. The manager whom i spoke to at Munsiyari also said it will be opened by 14th. It will be very cold, more than i expected... so i ll be well equipped to handle the weather.

Thank you for advice. You have been a great help.

Pray for me

He is leaving Munsyaari on 10th to some place else.
I will call him tomorrow once again for my booking at KMVN.
