Hi ,
I am just back from doing the Milam Glacier trek . We were the first to reach the snout of the glacier this season . This is due to the fact that there was record snowing in this reagion this winter , and the route opened late . We could make it because the ITBP parties had preceded us.
We started from Munsiyari on the 12th of May , and returned back on the 19th . The route from Nahar Devi to Rilkote was under a lot of snow . As we were returning , the mules were on their way to Milam .
Will post photos soon !
Cheers !
Thanks for the updates... re: the Khatling trek, there were large snow fields on the way up to the cave and zero point, but nothing too serious. However there was fresh snow above ~3400 meters every afternoon we were there, and it looked like the higher passes were definitely getting some good fresh powder. We were the only ones on the trail when we did it...besides the villagers who said we wouldn't be able to make it to Khatling.
Have fun!

wowwww guys ...wonderful information.
now i'm cursing myself for not joining this forum earlier.

anyways, my exams r finishing on the 5th. so i will leave calicut on the 5th night reach delhi on 6th (via b'lore). take the train on the 6th night and reach kathgodam on 7th morning. then take a bus to almora ... man i'll be visiting the place after soooo many years. will stay put at my granny's place. now the big question ... milam or pindari??? i have time till 17th june. on 18th afternoon, i have to catch my flight from delhi. so whaddya guys suggest??? now, after reading jeron's posts, i feel more inclined towards milam

some more info needed.... i will be going alone this time, so do i need a giude??
guess not from the previous posts. can someone give a checklist of the basic stuff to carry??? and how much money to have in ur pocket. also thinking of carrying my laptop as a backup for the camera's memory card. i have some trekking experience ... actually lots but none in the martoli side. i have lived in nainital, kathgodam, dehradun for 8 years when i was a lil kid . then i have visited yamunotri, ranikhet, mukteshwar, bhimtal, sattal, bhowali, almora, dwarahat, mussorie, dehradun, chakrata, deovan, kanasar, etc etc....
for the last 1.5 yrs i have been trekking travelling in the hill sattions of south india, like munnar, ooty and kodaikanal. done some small treks in the forests n hills around calicut also.

hey guys, me leaving for munsiyari tonight ... hopefully will make it all the way up to milam glacier :-). now, as i have gathered from the posts before, tents are not a strict necessity, since small lodgings are available all along the way (for ex: hotel nanda devi). pleae correct me if i am wrong. also, how much would a porter cost/day (approx)? i hardly have any heavy stuff. will try to keep it as light as possible. just the clothes i wear + camera + some foodstuff like glucose n dry fruits + water bottle + torch. anything else u guys think is important???

#essential medicine and first aid kit
#one extra pair of snickers (some one may contradict but its needed it current one has teared off)
#even if u r not carrying tents, carry one sleeing bag+mattress if u r not sure of accomodation standard in village huts.
#walk with anklets to prevent sudden twists
#carry woolen headcap(morning evening & night) and baseball cap(sunny day)

The trek

Yes, as written in the post, the trek can be done with minimum baggage as long as you stay on the main Munsyari - Milam path. You'll just need cash, warm/rainproof clothes, waterbottle, purifiers, snacks and preferable a sleeping bag or good blanket. I left most of my luggage at the Hansling in Munsyari and just took about 10kg along - no mules or guide needed!
Print out the map above too (and print some extra to leave at the places you stay, please!).

Hi,

How bad is the leech problem along this Milam glacier trek from Munsiyari?

I was initially planning on doing the Yuksom->Goecha La trek but have put that off given the tremendous amount of negative feedback I've received regarding the leeches in Yuksom and Bakhim.

Ashutosh - none whatsoever as far as I know. The trail hardly passes through forested areas.
