DO NOT do this alone. Always better to have two people. In 2005, we did not need a permit, but an i card and entered the details at the various itbp check posts.

Has anyone recently walked up the Lawan Gad from Martoli to the Nanda Devi East base camp? Any info on how many days it took, condition of the trail, good places to camp, altitude gain etc would be greatly appreciated.
Are there other routes?

You might want to ask some of the mountain guides themselves??....
I have put some of their contact details here -> http://almoraboy.blogspot.co.uk/2006...formation.html

Try asking Ganga Ram or Laxman. But you will have to converse in Hindi / Kumaoni.

Thanks AB, alas no Hindi or Kumaoni! Your blog is great btw. I am really just trying to work out how many days I need to set aside for this side trip to and from Martoli. The navigation looks straightforward enough from the maps. I have also read there is a route that goes to the Pacchu Glacier. I'll put aside four days and see how it goes.

Hi,

I would be going there in June. Reaching Munsiyari on 9th June 2013. There are two approaches to ND BC shorter one via Puchu and longer one via Lawanghad. Time permitting will go via both. Starting the longer one and then to Milam and on the return via Puchu back.

Currently me alone with a guide cum poter

Amar

Max trekking days would be 12-13 trying to cut it will figure out on the move itself..

Cost as i am alone taking my regular porter cum guide, should be around 750 to 1000 per day types... not spoken though

As far my knowledge, Milan Glacier is the most costly route (trek) in that region. I hope you've already reviewed a probable cost assumption.

Why do u say so... its a tea house trek hence the stay charges do add up. I have my tent though.

I am thinking to do this trek in the month of May(starting from 16th or 17th). But I have few doubts which I wasn't able to clear after reading this thread.

1) Should the Nanda Devi East Base Camp be accessible or should I expect a lot of snow.
2) I presume May is not the ideal month of trekking in the Uttarakhand Himalayas for peak lovers as most of the days are cloudy, preventing the views of the peaks. Am I most likely to miss the peaks in mid May?

Abhijitiitr

There are two routes for ND BC one is Puchu glacier route which is a day trip another is a 2 days trek from the valley below known as Lawan ghad.

I usually prefer late May. I would be starting on 9th June from munisyari for the same

Cheers

@Amarshah

Good Luck for the trek. I've yet not made up my mind for this trek. I'm skeptical of my chances of Devi Darshan in mid May which is the only time window available for me as of now.

Advice on Milam Glacier Trek

My buddy and I are planning on heading to Munsiyari in June for two weeks and would like to tackle the Milam Glacier trek, including the side-trek to Nanda Devi base camp. I was hoping to ask for a bit of advice.

We had planned on arranging the trek with an outfit on arrival in Munsiyari, including any equipment we'd need for the Nanda Devi excursion. Is this feasible? If so, which trekking outfits do you recommend?

If not, do you guys have an English speaking guide you could recommend? Thanks in advance!
