Rajkumar ..... thanks for your kind words. I guess all past Milam Trekkers have found my pictures "nostalgic" .... taking them back to their own trek-days. I suppose most of these scenery... waterfalls, ridges, valleys, peaks, rocks and even villages, huts and tea-shops all remain unchanging over many many years! ... KS

Wow those are amazing pictures Kothanda! Thanks so much for sharing them - I now get to see what amazing beauty I have missed!

You didn't see me on the trail since I never made it to Munsiyari; my injured back got worse on the flight to Mumbai and I decided to not risk the long ardous trek with a 20kg backpack and an injured back. I hope to however repeat the attempt again after I recover fully.

Kudos once again, and thanks for the photographs.

Sorry to hear you could'nt do the Trek. Hope you are well soon and do the Milam trek some other time.

It was a "little bit" tough trek ..... but the scenery and sights compensate many times over! Having a guide-porter to carry my bag really helped to complete the trek successfully. If I had carried my ownm 10-kg back-pack, I would have been laid low with back pain, in just a half-days trek! I consider my own body weight of 88kg, as a full load(!) of an average trekker of 60kg + 28kg backpack. I was joking with Debu - that he and I carried the same load to Milam Glacier & back!

The Milam trek: I really enjoyed it ... though I wish I had started it 15 days later, when I could have seen more local people in the upper villages and done some side treks including Nanada Devi

Thanks, indeed, for your feedback. Actually, I was writing this dairy mostly for myself ... and to share with a few close family members. But when I enrolled in IndiaMike Site in April-07 ... and found lots of contributors sharing their trek & travel experiences that was quite useful for me. And I realised maybe my Diary too could be of some use to others.

I am now glad that I did share it ... as a few reader's have written appreciative feedback emails. More than the specifics of a trek, I feel happy that some people have written to me about feeling inspired and motivated That sounds good to me

Hiee Jeroen....beautiful post ther, I just came back from Milam some days back..beautiful place..a lil tough though :-) and a corection to make,as u had mentioned the rest houses in Lilam and Bugdiar..ther were actually P.W.D's ( Public Works Departments) I had enquired with KMVN authorities in Munsiary..they said the Munsiary one was their last rest house,the others were all PWD's

I'm thinking about doing the Milam Glacier trek in mid-late September, but I just have a few questions:

• Has anyone done this trek recently (within the last year)? If so, can you advise about which villages are deserted? Do I need to bring tent, food, stove, etc?
• If I am going to be in Rishikesh, Hardiwar or Dehradun would it be best to take a bus to Almora and then share a jeep to Munsyari?
• What are the accommodation options in Munsyari? Will it be easy enough for me to find a place to stay?

i had done in 2005, so quite some time since i did it. Still, some things which will be the same for sure are ->

Populated villages -> Lilam, Bagudiyar, Martoli, Burfu, Milam.
You can easily do it without tent, food, stove, etc as the villagesare along the way. However, some westerners have got sensitive stomachs and might not be able to take in the village food. If you belong to that category, you need to take a stove along. Now, if you want to have flexible trekkign plans, you can take a tent, rather than pacing yourself according to the distance between the villages. But if you are fine with sleeping in huts or PWD guest houses, no need for a tent.

Yes, it is best to reach almora and from there head to munsyari.
you can get shared jeeps to munsyario, but remember, they leave early in the morning, as it is almost 200 kms from almora to munsyari. the bus travels from a longer route - Almora, Bageshwar, munsyari. the bus leaves kathgodam a little after midnight (around 1 am) and then reaches bageshwar by around 9 am. then it leaves for munsyari from there.

accomodation options - some private hotels. but the kumaon mandal vikas nigam tourist rest centre is also an ok ok place to stay. i have put their contact details below. you can get guides/porters for the milam trek at kmvn easily. i have put in the contact details below.

For the Pindari, Kafni, Milam, Sundardunga and Roopkund trek, I strongly recommend Anand as a guide. He is very reliable and will also carry your luggage and charges 300 Rs/Day. He lives in Khati village near Bageshwar and his cell no. is 9410858835.

i would like to thank almora boy for his inputs on travel to Munsiyari: BTW;
We four ended up trekking from 25 Sept to 01 Oct, upto Milam Glacier(3500 Mtrs) from Selapani (1700mtrs) in four days (a distance of appox 66 km one way) and returned back to roadhead in three days flat covering the return stretch via Martolia village . All this without a porter or guide in toe moving at a pace of about 1.5 Km (uphill) per hour or approx gaining 100 mtr altitude at an hour interval.This whilst carrying our packed-ration, snow-clothing and tent, all along hoping to cross Untadhura pass (maybe better luck next time). The reason i am not writing in detail about this stretch of trial is that u can get countless stories on this part of Johar valley from all-American descriptions by NOLS to the desi versions on India Mike site.
