anyways, i was happy with the snow at dhakuri. the problem is when u r on holidays, u got to meet so many ppl, parents, relatives, etc, that it gets really tight to fit treks and trips in a single holiday along with meeting everybody.
so, this time, i will try to take my parents along with me. let me see if i can get them till khati village. KS, will it be possible to arrange horses for them from loharkhet to khati? that ways they can also stay there and enjoy the place, and i can make khati a base for treks further on. my dad has gone till zero point in pindari, but that was many years ago, when i was in school. they have done lots of travelling in the mountain early on, liek 3 years in siachen glacier, 3 years in kupwara border posts, my mom spent most of her childhood in mukteshwar and almora, etc. but now they have been living in the plains since mid 1990s. so where all will it be possible to get horses to take them along? i was thinking of khati, if i get a chance then how about horses till bedni and ali? (it would also be tooo beautiful if it is covered with snow). and how about horses from narayan ashram onwards, towards chiyalekh?
Almoraboy: There are advantages and disadvantages of having home-town in the Kumaon. But mostly advantages [Not so for guys like me ... we have to suffer Relatives, Heat and the Meterless-auto-rick-drivers, when visiting home-town Chennai ]

Yes, I do think you can get ponies on the Pindari route to Khati and beyond .... Debu once asked me to bring family/Bhabi along ... and when I snorted a laugh ... he said he can arrange khachar/pony! So if you want, I can ask Debu for some Pony Tel Nos, when I meet him on 17th June, at Gwaldham?

yes pls. and ask him if he is also willing to go to those areas in winters? the last time i went there, the guides were not so willing, plus i did not have the required number of days.

Debu can certainly do "anything" in Bageshwar/Pindari area! Unfortunately he doesnt have a tel contact. [I am planning to present him a cellphone with lifetime-validity this time; and hope he will have regular incomes to keep buying talk-time]. If you like you can PM me your cell# and I will ask him to call and talk to you. BTW: Here is an intro on DEBU.

Its a tough thread, but I will try by my own way........mountains aquire different beauties in different seasons..though mountains in monsoons are not highly reccomended, I love mountains in the monsoon(of course if I am sure that my return journey wont be hindered by a landslide!!!!!). I still remember being in a cottage in Borong, a small village in South Sikkim last June. As the sun set , the surrounding forest became a conference hall of buzzing insects...of various kinds, and various tunes. It started raining and the the sound of rain falling on the tin roof top was heavenly.
Talking of snow....my vote goes for the beautiful Yumthang valley. It was white all over...and that was the first time I experienced a snowfall.
Now, about viewing peaks....I am in two minds between the wondrous sunrise form Jhandidanra, near Loleygaon in West Bengal(in the month of December); and the view of Mt. Kanchenjunga and family from Rinchenpong in Sikkim.
Its tough to decide the best among these......actually when I am bound for the Sikkim or North Bengal hills..crossing the Mahananda wildlife sanctuary takes my heart ot heaven.

Some of my favorites:

- Munsiyari in Kumaon. The Pancha chuli peaks spread like a huge canvass in front of you.
- Auli in winter. White and blue. Thats all the colors you see.
- Langza in Spiti. The village itself is at 4000M +, the green fields amongst the trans-himalayan landscape and Chau Chau Nau Kelda right in front.
- Sonmarg to Kargil drive. Huge meadows with wild horses galloping.

Just too many to list.

Sangla valley is in the Kinnaur district of South-east Himachal pradesh, very close to the border with Uttrakhand. Can reach there from Simla in a long day's drive.

My vote: Joshimath, Auli, Badrinath/Mana. Also enjoyed views of Kanchendzonga from Pelling (our room window opened right up to it). But we much prefer to have the mountains all around and close- so Badrinath and Mana take the cake.
