Tapovan trek

I was told that now you are not allowed to go beyond Gangotri due to ecological reasons, similar to what was done at the Nanda Devi sanctuary.
So treks to Tapovan, Gaumukh and beyond are out. Can anybody confirm this?

This is certainly not the latest info - Avid Trekker should field this - but the 2001 edition of Harish Kapadias Trekking & Climbing in Indian Himalayas describes the Gangotri Glacier Trek in some detail and says :

Quote:
GRADE : Medium
SEASONS : Early May to early October
RESTRICTIONS: None

I found another document from Indian Mountaineering Association , which defines the Inner Line .
Re Gangotri it says :

Quote:
D)The Western Garhwal area is open. Here rise the Gangotri group and the peaks above the Bandarpunch valleys.
I don´t know how up to date this document is, you should try to get some other confirmation - but I find it hard to believe that the Inner Line is going in the wrong direction.

Tapovan trek

This has nothing to do with the Inner Line. Even Nanda Devi sanctuary is not beyond the Inner Line. This is to restrict the number of visitors going beyond Gangotri, for environmental reasons.

I did the Gangotri-Bhojwasa-Gamukh-Tapovan trek in October'04. Their is a check post near Gangotri which ask's you to fill a form, and pay some entry fees. So in short you can visit Tapovan easily. Hope this has not changed.

thanks

This is just ridiculous. Where did you hear this?. There is only one place you could have heard this. I had some inside info, which said Gaumukh would close down in a year or two. I went there in May and posted the inside info on this site. Can you tell me where else you got this info from?.

I was speaking to a few park officials who were very vocal about it. They have been pushing for this on and off and now very serious. I don't think it is classified info or anything but I am going to remove references to it once I have answered in this thread. This site is so big now.

Granted.. but the document covered restrictions for trekkers in the Indian Himalayas, both along the Inner Line and other areas - as the quote showed.

Uttaranchal is charging entry fees for even trivial treks. They are also thinking of increasing the same. Bad.

For Tapovan, the situation as of May 2005 has not changed. Later on, don't know.
