I am a bit confused about point #6 (Trekking beyond Gomukh needs special permission) – now what is that? Any idea , plz?

Nice work.
How did you arrange it? Kindly post a link/details in the 'Gangotri NP permit' thread also.

Obviously this one is valid upto Gaumukh only. Treks to Tapovan, Nandanvan and points east require a 2nd permit.

Sat-phones for just visiting Tapovan-Nandanvan...not very likely.
I read in the bengali travel magazine "BHRAMAN" that some guys attempted trek upto Kirthi-bamak from Tapovan this year in mid June. They mentioned all the rules as previously discussed but nothing regarding necessity of Sat-phones.May be that is exclusively needed for Kalindi Khal(owing to the accident last year). But all other formalities are due to formation of the new Gangotri National park...main aim being conservation of flora & fauna in the upper reaches of Bhagirathi valley & keep check on pollution & prevent further damage & glacial recession of Gaumukh snout.

Sat-phones are mandatory now for safety of trekkers attempting KK.(Easier to find u when ur lost... )

Someone mentioned the National park gate is just a couple of kilometers from Gangotri(on the way to Chirbasa)...is there another gate/check-post near the Gaumukh snout???

Second half of October is not a good choice for these parts as the weather starts getting foul. You need five days to complete this trek comfortably. No special equipments needed. We went in May and had to cut our path at places with an ice axe. The scree zones in the route are really bad.So a good pair of shoes is a must.

HI,
I am planning to trek tapovan alone between oct 4-11. Didnt know that we would hav to take permission from DFO. I tried calling the numbers given in this thread but couldn't reach them. Any other way? Can we reach Uttarkashi and then do it?

Thanks and Rgds,
Puneeth.

Keep an extra day for that. You might cut that day away from your 7 day schedule. Can still do Tapovan.

Day 1- Gangotri- Bhojwasa
Day 2- Bhojwasa- Tapovan
Day 3- Tapovan Exploration
Day 4- Tapovan- Bhojwasa
Day 5- Bhojwasa- Gangotri

Hi Somnath, is there a website where you can follow the situation and have more info?
I will be in Uttarkashi on october 4 or 5 for the Tapovan trek, but I also would like to prepare an alternative route, although I will definitely want to see Gangotri and Gaumukh.
Thank you

Puneeth,
Kalindikhal Accident September 2008

fab,
Some info is here (link is given) but we are in touch with our and DFO office at Uttarkashi over telephone. I’ll them on 1st Oct (their meeting will be held on 30 th Sep) and update here.
BTW, if you are a member of Orkut, you can follow Trekking in Himalayas community where some latest info is shared from some members who are just back from the same route. If you are interested I can send you the link in PM.

Tapovan is our 1st priority but just keeping other options open. If Tapovan is not open I dont think we are going to visit only Gomukh because I went to Gangotri in 2006.
