Welcome to Indiamike, Urvashi (sounds like we are in same team – is it?). Could you please share your itinerary / planning with us.

Friends, thank you once again for this precious info. We tried to contact Uttarkashi and came to know that they can arrange papers but we need to present in DFO office for the formalities. Well, we’ll definitely try to avoid a stay at Uttarkashi then.

Avid, thank you once again for the estimation help. I was calculating like Rs.200/- per person per day which looks similar with you. Hmmmmm…….. now the next hurdle is return ticket.

19/10/08 SUNDAY BOARD UPASANA EXP. TRAIN

I am so sad that I could not manage to get the ticket on 4th Oct. Our travel agent failed to get it, he managed the tkt. for 5th on doon exp. that also a break journey (howrah to mugalsarai, mugalsarai to haridwar). For that reason our whole program has to be shifted 1 day late. Some people who went there advised me to go to Kedartal first then tapovan because 2nd week of october may have snowfall. I did not decide it finally , after reaching there I will take the final decission which one should be done first. This is the first time I will be carrying a tent and I am a bit nervous about it. I hope we will meet there and if possible please include us with ur group for kedartal trek, because me and my husband will go there alone. I feel it is better to go for a trek when u r in a group.
U told that U tried to contact Uttarkashi and came to know that they can arrange papers for u, can u please guide me what are the procedure for that? Where should I will apply so that we also don't need to stay at Uttarkashi as already we missed a day. Now another hurdle is waiting for us because we don't know whether our travel agent can get the return tkt. of upasana on sunday or not.

Thanks to all of YOU friends for your valuable suggesions. Please keep in touch

Urvashi.
Hi Urvashi,
Thanks for your post. Good to see HARSHIL in your plan. Actually I was also trying to push HARSHIL in our plan. Ha ha ha….. I’ve seen so many pix and a glimpse of Harshil during my last trip to Gangotri.
I would love to include you in the team. Please let me talk to our other team members – most probably we’ll meet on this weekend at one of our friend’s place at Shyambazar. Both of you are most welcome there.
Come on, you need to know about us before planning a trip with us – everyone is unknown to both of you. Who knows we can create some trouble out there ?

- Somnath

Hi Somnath.
Thanks for your reply. Yes Harshil is a very nice place and every time we went to that area we thought to spend atleast one night there but till now we could not. This time we thought it again. Let's see.
Please talk to your other team members about us to include in your team for Kedar tal. How many are there in your group? Also pls let me know what should be done to get the permits ready from here and can collect it from Uttarkashi as early as possible.
Regarding creating problems, I think we trekkers go to trek in such high altitudes facing so many adverse situations to get some fresh oxygen and stamina for the rest of the days of the year, forgetting all the problems of our everyday life. Do we get enough time to create problems for other!!!! At least I must say that where ever we went to trek we found co trekkers very very helpful. Specially we Bengalis start with "Dada apnara kothay jachhen" and ended with "achha dada abar dekha hobe". Basically every time we started alone and ended as a team . So this time also why should n't I will be optimist?

thank,
waiting for ur reply
Urvashi.

Well said Urvashi. You are absolutely right. Really we go to gather some oxygen for rest of the year. I appreciate your judgment.
I know there is no need to talk to other members but it is just a courtesy. There is only one lady in our team (another family were there but just dropped out due to some serious surgical procedure) and she will be so excited to include you in the team. It would be great if you join us on Sunday. If possible please provide your email ID / phone number in a private message and I’ll send you the contact details of our team members. Do you think it is OK?

One of the UTK contacts told us to confirm the number and name of the team members so that they can proceed but we need to be present at the office to collect the papers. They’ve asked for 7 days time. Hence we’ll inform them at the end of September.

Team size:
6 from Kolkata + I from B’lore + 2 from Delhi = 9 (expected). You can expect some discount ha ha ha….. as usual 1 – 2 may cancel at the last moment.

Avidbahi and Dilliwala, if this veja fry is Non-Veg then it is prohibited at Gangotri.

Question

OK,
There is another group of people who think that we need to complete one part. Like we are planning for Tapovan then we should complete Neeltal / Nandavan / Vasukital etc. so that next time we cam concentrate on Kedartal.
Actually it is not a bad idea to enjoy one area at a time. Friends, what is your opinion?
If we drop the Kedartal idea, is it possible to cover those areas keeping start and end date as fixed?

Somi, I would prefer for the Tapovan-Neel Taal-Nandanvan, with Vasukitaal at a single go. Come for Kedartal again after sometime.

Doingb NeelTal is anyways possible if you are staying a day in Tapovan.
Nandanvan and Vasuki Taal can be done by planning in 1 more extra day and instead of proceeding to Gangotri from Tapovan you shall proceed to Gangotri from Nandanvan.
The extra day would be
Tapovan- Nandanvan( camp crew stays behind at Nandanvan)- proceed to Vasuki Taal and be back to Nandanvan camp.

Now if you want to camp at Vasuki Taal...may be take another day

So including Vasukitaal Nandanvan essentially costs you an additional day or 2. By chopping off Kedartaal you save 3/4 days for sure.
10/10/2008 FRIDAY TREK TILL TAPOBAN TAPOBAN

11/10/2008 SATURDAY TREK TO NeelTAL & Post lunch trek to Nandanvan

12/10/2008 SUNDAY Nandanvan- Vasuki Taal- Nandanvan

13/10/2008 MONDAY Nandanvan- Bhojwasa

14/10/08 TUESDAY Bhojwasa- Gangotri- Harsil

15/10/08 WEDNESDAY TREK (Save)

16/10/08 TRURSDAY (Save)

17/10/08 FRIDAY BACK (Save)

18/10/08 SATURDAY BACK TO HARDWAR HARDWAR

19/10/08 SUNDAY BOARD UPASANA EXP. TRAIN

P:S: Just be careful about one thing. Nandanvan usually has a water problem around this time of the year. When we went there was just one trickling stream. It would have been quite difficult to support a decent sized team.

Thumbs up Change

Bhaswaran, Ashu and Supratim, thank you once again for your valuable comment & info. Ashu, we’ve reservation from Delhi on 18th Oct. So we need to be at Haridwar on 17th Oct. Still we can keep 1 or 2 days as extra (you are requested to verify the given itinerary). 11th Oct - TREK TO NeelTAL & Post lunch trek to Nandanvan is it possible? If the trail is easy then distance would not be a great problem but do you think the trail is not that difficult?

BTW, today we (4 available members of the team) were just accumulating all the feedback / suggestion / proposal and comments and it is clear that Kedartal + Tapovan without keeping any buffer day (even hectic schedule like Haridwar to Gangotri in one day etc.) in hand is not a wise decision. Moreover, if we come back from Tapovan then it may not be possible for us to comeback once again for Neeltal / Nandavan part in future. But if we concentrate on Tapovan / Neeltal / Nandavan the trip becomes comparatively relaxed – we’ll get more time to enjoy the trail (which was really missing in previous plan). Hence we are dropping the idea of Kedartal this time but ….. but we’ll definitely go there someday.

Thanks for helping us (as always) to take decision. Here is the new itinerary (someone suggested for Kirti Glacier from Tapovan):

Day - 01 : 4-Oct-2008 Sat Howrah (rajdhani)-16.55pm
Day - 02 : 5-Oct-2008 Sun New Delhi 10.15am(arr) (8477-Utkal express)----14.00pm(dep) Haridwar—20.30pm(arr)
Day - 03 : 6-Oct-2008 Mon Haridwar Uttarkashi (To get the permission from DFO)
Day - 04 : 7-Oct-2008 Tue Uttarkashi Gangotri
Day - 05 : 8-Oct-2008 Wed Tue-Gangotri Bhojbasha(14 kms)
Day - 06 : 9-Oct-2008 Thu Bhojbasha Gomukh(4kms) Tapovan(4kms)
Day - 07 : 10-Oct-2008 Fri Tapovan to Kirti > Tapovan
Day - 08 : 11-Oct-2008 Sat TREK TO NeelTAL & Post lunch trek to Nandanvan
Day - 09 : 12-Oct-2008 Sun Nandanvan- Vasuki Taal- Nandanvan
Day - 10 : 13-Oct-2008 Mon Nandanvan- Bhojwasa / Chirbasa
Day - 11 : 14-Oct-2008 Tue Chirbasa / Bhojwasa- Gangotri- Harsil
Day - 12 : 15-Oct-2008 Wed Harsil Rest / buffer day.
Day - 13 : 16-Oct-2008 Thu buffer day.
Day - 14 : 17-Oct-2008 Fri Harsil - Haridwar
Day - 15 : 18-Oct-2008 Sat Haridwar to Delhi > Samparkkranti Exp for Kolkata.
Day - 16 : 19-Oct-2008 Sun Kolkata

Looks good
It took me 4 hrs to cross the Gangotri glacier

It should take you 3 odd hours to explore Neeltaal

I am assuming you start 730is in the morning for Neeltaal. Comeback to camp..have lunch and leave for Nandanvan about 1200 Hrs.
You should be camping at Nadanvan latest by 1700.
