Suggestions for 5-6 days from Shimla?

I'm going to be up in Simla around the 6th October and have to be back in Delhi on the 12th. Open to catching a flight back to save a day.

Does anyone have any suggestions on good (read breathtaking scenery) low-intensity treks I could do in that time? Is anything in the direction of Manali ambitious for that number of days, even if we fly back?

On a related subject, when I go up to the hills the food I find has tended to be absolutely dire and uninspired. Is there a secret to finding decent little dhaba-type places with good food, at least in Simla? What about while walking in the mountains?

Thanks much for all suggestions

There are plenty of intersting places around Shimla where you can visit, like Kufri, Naldehra, Fagu, Tatta Pani, Summer Hill, Tara Devi and Sankat Mochan. In addition, there are a few good walks in Shimla itself.

As for Dhabas, they exist at every nook and corner of the hill-station.

Enjoy yourself !

Thanks, SHIMLA

Are these places that you listed all day trips out of Shimla? Or are they 3-4 day trips in themselves? Ideally I'm looking for the latter.

It's quite easy to find listings of places in the hills around that area. It's a bit harder to plan an itinerary. I'd be interested in more information about how long it takes to get around to these places, which treks in that area people found impressive, pretty, remote - as opposed to the standard experience, hanging around hotels and gardens, surrounded by Punjabi honeymooners.

Consider taking a bus up to the fantastic Sangla valley (or get a taxi for more comfort and speed) - leave very early and you'll get there early afternoon. See Sangla with it's great Bhuddist temple the first day, next day go up the valley and stay at the village at the top of the valley; beautiful in itself and great for walks around. Then take a morning bus down to Rakcham, the village halfway down, and cross the river where there are beautiful hikes down to Sangla if you cross the river. Great for camping too if you have a tent. The sight of the towering mountains is unforgettable.
See also my report at www.travelpod.com/members/jeroen. Sangla has plenty of guesthouses and some good Tibetan and Nepali eatieries in the centre. If you don't mind the busride, this is a great alternative to staying in noisy old Shimla!
