Ahem, 'walked' - don't you mean that you just RAN from Manali to Leh, and probably broke a record or two as well. I hope you have witnesses so you can make it to the record book!

Best wishes
Lars

Thanks now I see them! Great photos!

So you more or less followed the same route as the highway?

I still find it quite surreal that you trekked from Manali to Darcha in just three days?! I mean the road distance is around 135km as far as I know, and there is an almost 4000m pass in between. Going by bus takes a full day. And did I infer correctly, that it only took one-two days from Taglung La to Leh? I have a book with two English guys running through the Himalayas from Sikkim to Kashmir in 100 days, back in the 1980s, to raise funds for a Nepal charity. But that was with only the bare minimum of weight. I am sure you could break that record if you wanted!

So yes, details would be appreciated, though it's not that I'm hoping to go it faster or even at the same speed.

Best wishes
Lars

few tips about trekking to leh

hi,
First of all, I will clarify few genuine doubts :-

(a) It was nothing for the records and it was only for adventure. We had originally started from Kullu and walked till Manali to check weather we can walk at higher altitues. When we did it without major problems than only we decided to venture ahead.
So any of yu planning this jaunt , must first try this instead before going ahead of Rohtang.

b) Secondly we walked not till leh city but till Leh valley and stopped around 60 km short of Leh bcos we found it futile walking on road without any more adventurous challenges. Frankly it became boring considering that there was no trekking left. Moreover whatever little leave I had was almost exhausted.

c) If yu see the photos, yu may have judged our profession and our job demands very high level of physical fitness and endurance. That is why I lost interest in going with bigger group.

Thumbs up

hi, during ten day we covered over 400 km road distance and if the road walking from kullu is also included than the distance increases to approx 430 km but than after walk from kullu we acclimatised by climbing mountains around manali for two days before initiating this trek.

Thumbs up

Manali to Leh is actually 475 kms and I am told there is not a single petrol bunk. So even experienced drivers also dred that road. Well this is really incredible achievement guys. Understand you are from Army.. but still close to 40-45km per day high altitude walk is real good record. Please try entering Guiness Book or even Limca book of records.

Infact just staying 1 hour at Rohtang early in the morning itself was quite a task for me.

Anyway.. Kudos to you once again.

Hi Sidred22

It's a great accomplishment, even if you say it's not record breaking. I'm sure you would have had a hard time convincing ponymen to follow you in this pace.

Actually, after seeing your pictures I cancelled all possible plans for declaring war against India.

It's interesting to see a trek of this route, because I think most people only consider it as a route to go by vehicle. But your pictures show how beautiful the scenery is, and that it is actually a very worthwhile trekking route. Even if it might take closer to 20 days to most people.

Best wishes
Lars

Vishalguleria posted this altitude map of the Manali-Leh route in another thread here (Cycling Manali - Leh) - I'm just forwarding it here for those who need to put this walk into perspective!
