Stok Kangri

Hi

I am planning to do Stok Kangri in end-July or the beginning of August. Can someone please help me with these doubts:

a) can i readily hire a good guide cum cook when i reach Leh?
b) How much do such guides cost normally
c) I will also need to hire the usual stuff we need for the trek e.g. crampons, technical equipment etc. Is this available for hire at Leh?

Any experience is good experience. So i am counting on all here to help me make it!

Cheers

I went to Stok Kangri last year in August. It was a rare year when no expedition summitted that time because the weather was aweful. But timing wise, you are spot on.
Would advise you to join a fixed departure rather than organise it on your own. Will be cheaper and better.
You could write to me at ashishkaul007@gmail.com to discuss. I know of some people, but the decision should purely be yours.

Since I started planning Ladhak trip since last 3 to 4 yrs I wanted to climb Stok.

If I am not mistaken its a trekking mountain rather than a climbing mountain right?

and is it possible to reach Stok early morning from Leh and do the climb and be back in Leh by night fall or is it pushing the system too far.

Whats the approx climbing duration for Stok Kangri?

Forgot to mention that due to tight schedule and less time - I dont have the time to do a trek to stok , climb Stok Kangri and finsh it off as a trekking and camping trek Leh Itinerary inquiry ....Please Help !!

a/ yes
b/ negotiable but reasonable
c/ yes from a good agency
pm me if you need a recommendation. The fixed departure treks can be too fast an ascent. Even the 4 days that is usual is too short. 3 days in Leh followed by stops at 3800, 4100, 4500 and 4800 is preferable. How you reconcile that with the terrain is a moot point...........
If I plan to sleep at 5000 meters I take 5 days from 3500 meters. Please read the AMS thread, dont let an agency tell you that it can be safely done in a couple of days. I suspect more people fail because of altitude problems than weather problems.

Thanks. What we ar eplanning to do is maybe go for a trek in Ladakh for 4 days to acclimatise ourselves, and then attempt Stok Kangri. Hopefully, that should help us as far as the altitude is concerned. There are two of us, and we don't plan to join any organised group - rather find our own guide, equipment etc and try and make it.

Did you do a small trek too, before climbing Stok, or did you attempt it straight?

If planning a lead in trek you could come in from the Alchi direction ia the Dundunchen la and cross the Indus at Chilling and then go over the ganda la or any one of the Markha permutations, for instance hemis to matho la and then stok. Some people do SK from a standing start, i would not.

I hae not done it but my regular trek guide has on several occasions and recommends a lead in. The last two years I have done 5800 passes after nights at 4900 and 5200 and been fine on the other hand, i have been flattened on the ganda la base camp on day 2 of a trek when i had only spent 2 days in Leh - learing the hard way.......it really does make a difference in enjoyment as much as safety

There are other trekking peaks in the Kang yatse massif that have a more gradual ascent.

What is the permit situation like? Has it become like in the Alps where the government does not make it its business where you climb? Or are the old rules with various cumbersome bureaucratic requirements still in force. It used to be more difficult to get permission than to scale the mountain you wanted to climb.

I second Captain Bruce on that proper acclimatisation will make the climb far more enjoyable. Unless you are darn rich and can live in a "high altitude house" as some xc-skiers do there is no other way then to spend time on altitude.
