Stok Kangri

Greetings ,
Hope everyone is doing just fine .

Well, we are a group of amateur hikers . This June we are visiting Milam Glacier which will be our first true blue trekking experience .
Even though we are yet to set foot on our first trekking experience I have few questions on Stok Kangri .

1. How difficult it is to scale Stok Kangri for a person like me .
2. Is October a good season to visit the place or is it too late .
3. Is a 12 days trip good enuf for the Stok Kangri trek .

Can anyone please guide me on the above .

Thanks and Regards,
Devleena

hmm...

well, If u havent trekked in Ladakh before I wouldnt suggest u to go for climbin Stok kangri now..though Stok kangri is technically not that challengin a peak..the climb can be very strenous...I wud suggest u to do a couple of treks in ladakh frst and then come back for Stok kangri next year..not this time..other members mite not agree though

Lightbulb depends

Stok Kangri requires average 14 days of trekking including rest days for acclimatization. If you have been trekking for 2 weeks in Ladakh and doing high passes, [meaning very well acclimatized] you can do Stok Kangri in seven days.... but don't try it

Pin Parbati Pass

Had a look at some of the threads on Pin Parvati Pass on IM and realized that we as a starter group might do better with a couple of experienced trekkers for this trek .
So if any one of you is planning to do the Pin Parbati pass this year or coming year please let us know .
We would be very lucky to be a part of an experienced team .

Thanks and Regards,
Devleena .

Lightbulb Milam

In the OP you said "Milam" as your "first trek". Go ahead with it. Get the fun part first.

Pin Parvati is not for the "first time" as you have presently realized. This Sep Oct I might [??] be doing Annapurna Circuit [Thorang La] plus Annapurna Base camp [15 plus 7 days trek]. The Thorang La is higher than Pin Parvati but not so dangerous in terms of crevasses etc. But altitude is altitude. It does not spare even experienced people who break the rules. Get some altitude in your blood and you will be going places all over the Himalaya.

If you wish to do the Annapurna Circuit, you will have to start mild jogging and intense walking [min 10 km, max 20km] every day just to attain general fitness. Altitude is a different matter altogether. You cannot practise for it at sea level. Only the mountains allow you that luxury.

Hi Avid ,
ummmmm.. Well I know I am in a hurry skurry .
All apologies for that .Thanks a lot for correcting me .

Yup , after Milam I will have some altitude experience and will rightly know how far I can or cannot.

If you are running everyday [not "kind of" ] for 2 kms, it should be enough to prepare you.

Walking is better coz it means more of long term stamina.

Suggest you do alternate days 10 km walking and alternating with 2 kms running on treadmill.

If you find this very easy, then walk with a 10 kg backpack, slowly taking it upto 25 kg.

If you find this too very easy, then you are ready for mountaineering expeditions !!!

TREK ON !! [post the Milam report after you are back]

HAPPY TREKKING !!
