Outdoor Travel Gear

Thankyou for the information. I have visited the Outdoor Travel Gear store in Wadala, Mumbai. They also have an impressive updated website www.OutdoorTravelGear.com

Also visited Great Outdoors store which was close by in Dadar. I must say not worth going there.

Outdoor Travel Gear store has loads to offer not just in terms of products but also much needed guidance / information about products and everything related to outdoors.

Bought some stuff from AVI Industries

Well,

I have bought some materials from AVI Industires, Mumbai. Well, when buying from there, e careful about one thing. The old man there uses fear as a big selling tool, lol. We had initially planned only for a sleeping bag and a backpack but went on to buy a whole lot of stuff(almost worth 16,000 bucks).

I felt some stuff where kinda costly but were less compared to the price quoted by Adventure 18 store whose address has also been mentioned by you.

But should say that the backpack and tent were of awesome quality. Backpack was manufactured by these guys only but the tent i bought was the Alaska model. The one they were manufacturing was available for 4000 buck 4 men tent, but i bought the Alaskan which was 8000 bucks 2 men tent . The local one didn't look of good quality.

The tent was put to test on day one by heavy rains and strong winds, luckily for us it stayed.

Dear Paddy,

Learn to fear the mountains, its not a stroll in the park when you go trekking/mountaineering. Overconfidence kills.

The old man you mentioned has 40+ years of hardcore mountaineering knowledge. He has himself lead expeditions in the Himalayas in the late seventies, eighties and early nineties and is well known among that generation of climbers. When he talks about fearing the mountains he speaks from personal experience and does not want amateur trekkers ending up in trouble just because of lack of basic mountaineering knowledge.

Take advantage of his knowledge. There are very few people in India with his kind of mountaineering knowledge gained out of personal experience who are willing to give it out free of cost.

Happy Mountaineering.

Some how I find Strikage stuff to be cheap in quality (read local) with not much of price advantage.

When it comes to facing challenges of long and high alt treks, I would rely on relieable gear from reputed manugfarcturers, hardly any made in India. Imported gear are much reliable.

I also have a similar feeling about stikage gear. Had a bad experience with it.

I found an online store based in mumbai called Outdoor Travel Gear, also have ordered a couple times. Must say the quality and service is impeccable.

Backpacks/rucksacks are good. Even NIM orders them. Trek hats, pouches are okayish-not of very great quality. They have some more stuff like water bottles, tents, sleeping bags from Alpinist, Lafuma etc all standard stuff. Swiss knifes, torches all imported. Occasionally they get Lafuma/Millet boots, jackets imported. Lucky if you can get your hands on them and in right size which fits you..

Wildcraft is known for backpacks/rucksacks.

Depends on brandand type/temp rating of the bag. Hollow or down fill etc. If it is a Lafuma bag rated for low temp 2000 is okayish. More or less all Bangalore shops will charge the same.

Yesterday saw some good quality rucksacks in Woodlands, though bit on the costlier side. Rucksack of 40 lt cost - Rs 3500.
