South India in early October

My family and I had planned a two-week VOF trek during Dussera, but at the last minute we have postponed that until next year following a death in the family. In the meantime, the kids still have time off during Dussera and we still would like to get in a hiking trip; so we were thinking of something closer to home and shorter.

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a long weekend outing from Bangalore during early October? Is Silent Valley still rain soaked then? Are Kudremukh and Kumara Parvata reasonable hikes at that time of year?

My usual disclaimer: I've never used this series but it's said to be good, might be something for you: http://traveller.outlookindia.com/bookdetail.aspx?id=13. Have a look at their other titles as well, they may have others covering the region.

Bangalore to Silent Valley for a weekend may not be a great idea, if you also include travel time (I'm assuming you want to explore the area a bit). Time of year seems fine for the region.

I've got a dog eared copy of that book at home. It is good, but not really trekking oriented. Looking at the wildlife book, I have to laugh. It includes Pearl Valley; which I thought was a semi-secret dayhike destination just outside of Bangalore. The trick with Pearl Valley is to hike the 1 km in to get past the growds and trash. The falls near the trailhead are a popular picnic spot and it boggles my mind that people leave trash behind where they picnic, but that is another thread for another time.

clint_bond may be right about the travel time to silent valley.

The stretch of the Western Ghats in Karnataka is probably our best bet in this case.

Other Probable Options are :

Travel time - oneway from Bangalore in Car - Around 51/2 hours]
1) Getting to "Iruppu Falls" [Coorg ]and hiking "Brahmagiri Mountain Ranges" -- Forest dept permission is easy to get and a guide will accompany you

Travel time - oneway from Bangalore in Car - Around 6 hours]
2) Getting to "Thirunelli Temple" [Wayanad but just near to Karnataka border]and hiking until "pakshipathalam" - Same Brahmagiri Mountain Ranges

Travel time -oneway from Bangalore in Car - Around 5 1/2 hours]
3) Just Staying in any of the Resorts near Masinagudi and trying out the "Treks they offer" from 1 Hour to 3 hours on the Nilgiris
