Snowboarding in India?

Hello All, I want to combine my 2 passions: India and Snowboarding. So I pose this question to IMers: Do you know of any places in India (ski resorts?) that cater to snowboarding?
With the great Himalayas in the north, it would make sense that there would be some resorts catering to winter sports but I am having a tough time coming up with any results. Any ideas? Shimla, do you know?

Thanks in advance everyone.

Shunty,

I figured this year wouldn't be possible at all. Jan/Feb of 2007 seems like the target now. What worries me though is the baggage handlers at IGI in New Delhi. My fear is that even an extra padded snowboard bag may not be able to save my snowboard from harm.

You are right be there in Jan and Feb.., I rent snow board in Joshimath. But my friend Jan, bring it from England, as i know well that he get a large baggage and he have there his cloths and snowboard seperate, while its bandles and other parts were sperate on other bages. we joint them in Joshimath hotel and our snow board was ready for next day. it was not difficult to bring snow board.

Well the snowboard was safe over here. withpur any sketch or harm.

You can do it by same way.

All the best.

Gulmarg

gulmarg is the f'ckin nuts..excuse my latin.

I was there for 3 weeks. It's got everything what most European and North American resorts lack...amamzing powder, but Gulmarg is still in its infancy in terms of infrastructure. Give ita few more seasons and the place will be on the Internatioal Map.

It's off piste....at 13,000ft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks everyone for your replies and input.
From what I have been reading, it seems like the resorts (if we can call them that) are not as developed as out west, and correct me if I'm wrong, there is a lack of ski lifts, gondolas, etc, and that one has to walk/trek up. Is that right?

Shunty,
Have you snowboarded elsewhere in the world? How does snowboarding in Auli/Gulmarg compare to other places?

I also read about an indoor ski/snow resort near Hyderabad:

The resort of Gulmarg, will offer you powder snow like you hva enever seen in your life. Plus it boasts the highest ski gondola lift in the world, at 13,000ft.

What it does lack is teh nightlife. Only a few good restaurants.

If you want booze buy it from Delhi.

I took my snowboard gear with me, although my bag is a Dakine and is very well padded. I had no complaints on any damage etc.

The thing about the western resorts is people start celebrating when thet get 1 inch of snow.....in gulmarg, you are buried in snow.

Its the best resort that i have been too around the world, and i have been to Canada and Japan and frequently visit france and Italy, in terms of quality of snowboarding.

The restaurants and nightlife are very basic, but will only improve year by year....

check out: www.himalayanpowderdreams.com

Dont be put off by all teh crap you hear in the news about Kashmir.....teh people are extremely hospitable....and as for skiing, non comparable to anywheer else i have been too, and i met quite a few australians and canadians who would agree with me.

PS the season is between december till march/april

These westerners have never seen anything like it. Besides it rests in the Highest Mountain ranges in the world - Himalayas...sanskrit for "abode of snow"

Cool

So, if I go in March, I could still get a week or 2 of snowboarding in? What has the snow been like this year?
