Snow trek : Hari - Ki - Doon in December

Hi... Im planning a trek to Har Ki Doon at the Garhwal ranges during December...during 26th Dec to 3rd Jan.. Am looking for ppl interested to join me... It will be a good adventure trek with plodding on snow.... Cost would be approx Rs. 9,000 per pax depending on the group size... Hi amit i will be in india then however i think where you are planing you will not be able to go as the roads and treks would be blocked due to snowfall so change the idea and plan for something else i would suggest even im thinking not yet decided

Got in touch with a support agency who will organise the arrangements. Details awaited.. Any1 interested to join my group pls confirm by 20th Oct.. There has been some news that garhwal ranges have begun experiencing good snow from now onwards.. Ideally the start date of trek would be 28th Dec and completing on 3rd Jan by close of day giving 7 complete days to capture memorable moments of the valley and its surroundings..

all the best for your trek.

the road generally goes upto sankri village...and sometimes a littkle bit further.

this trek can be done by you alone + some guides cum porters.

the charges of the guides/porters can be kept down to Rs. 250/day

you can also get the guest houses on the way..as nobody else migth be there at this time (hence no need for tents)

the guest houses have beds available.

Hi Almoraboy.. I have checked both the blogs.. Ur and Chitrang's experience is superb and speaks a lot abt the pictures.. Does it requires any support from a tour operator?? Also what were the total costs U incurred, just for me to have an idea... Did U carry food and ration along from Sankri?? Where was ur starting point from (ex-Delhi or Dehradun).. Did you require to use gaiters to walk on snow?? Again your advise shall be appreciated..Thanks :-)

nah, nothing special. just normal sports shoes.

and i paid the porter around 200/day. and it can be done easily in 6 days. (with inflation, u can now make it as 250/day).

and just check for one thing...tell the guide/porter (very strictly) that there will eb no drinking on the ay. he can drink as much as he wants after he has completed the trek.

no tour operator needed. just pick up the guide/porter at sankri (or netwar, or any other village on the way).

u can do it within 3k bucks (sankri to sankri), but do carry more for emergency and for travellign all the way from mumbai to sankri and back.

and the trek starts from sankri. (delhi, dehradun..all the way till sankri is motorable, so u do not trek on that way)..of course, soem walkign enthusiasts will trek from netwar to sankri also to enjoy the walk through the forest.

Did U carry food along or were there dhabas and restaurents available at all guest houses on the way?? Need to be sure on that.. Will utensils & cooking gas on rent and food packets be available at Sankri??

Hi.. The plans looks like to be as per below ..
1) Arrive at New Delhi by train and then proceed further to Dehradun by bus. If it becomes a common group from Mumbai then a direct train to Dehradun is the option.
2) Day 1 - Drive from Dehradun to Sankhri village 180kms (base camp and starting point of trek)
3) Day 2 - Trek from Sankhri to Taluka (12kms)
4) Day 3 - Trek from Taluka to Seema (16 kms)
5) Day 4 - Trek from Seema to HKD (13 kms)
6) Day 5 - Trek return back from HKD to Seema
7) Day 6 - Trek return back from Seema to Taluka
8) Day 7 - Trek return back from Taluka to Sankhri
9) Return trip back to Mumbai by train

It will be winter time..So heavy woollen clothing and wind proof jacket is recommended. No tents and sleeping bags required as stay is available at GMVNL guest houses.

I yet have to assign dates to the above days as per the itinerary and convenience of the group. If any1 is interested to join me pls introduce yourself and confirmation thru a mail by or b4 20th october to finalise train tickets.

u can buy the food items at sankri village. or sometimes, even ta taluka. when i was there last, there was a general store in taluka, next to the gmvn tourist rest centre.

Thanks so much for the info.. but my excitement is never ending till I actually go there.

Tell me further, when I negotiate with the porter, do I insist them to carry luggage and cook food.. Or will a cook be required seperately..

As my earlier saying goes, appreciate ur help and advise..

no separate cook needed...porter will cook ..
have soup/maggi/tea/ and wheat/rice for dinner

if possible carry toffee to distribute to village childerns...you will see lots of them...we distribute many of them..

check the porter/guide in day time for bonfire in night

Hi Amit... i just went to har ki Dun in September, so know few people out there who can be excellent guides. If you need any help or suggestions just drop a message. Would love to go to HKD again in December but lots of constraints in December for me.
