Sankri to Taluka is no more motorable

No No... Sankri to Taluka is no more a motorable road. There is a Landslide 3 kms from Sankri which is the last point where a car can reach. After that rest 9 kms you have to trek through lanslides and forests. but its great great fun...

@ Manishi..
Your feedback is a welcome note.. Let me have more details about guides and porters and driver.. Do you have their contact numbers?? Let me know if you can make it in december to join me. The forum is open and look to finalise the group by 20th oct to make a budget for group members. Some would like to know... I will srtart the trek on 28th Dec to 3rd Jan (7 days)..

@ Chits..
Thanks for the driver's contacts.. I will call him.
The rates are also ok and can be distributed among the group..
Dehradun should be a good option to assemble the group and spend the day, arrange guide & porters and food requirements. I hope khajan singh can help on this.. Also it will give some time for accimilitization. Delhi looks a bad option because in december fog and smog will delay our plans to reach delhi and dehradun. I dont want to delay the start of trek. Any comments..There is a direct train from mumbai to dehradun everyday.. so this option seems ok for me now..

The direct train from Mumbai (Bandra Terminus) to Dehradun takes about 42 hours. If you take Paschim Express which departs from Bandra Terminus @ 11.35 a.m. and reaches New Delhi @10.50 a.m. the next day, you can get the connection to Dehradun by Janashatbdi Exp which departs from New Delhi @ 15.25 and reaches Dehradun @ 21.10 hrs. This way, you can reduce one night of train travelling.

@ Sadanand.

Thanks buddy. The only point that keeps me worrying is weather situations in Delhi due to fog.. For last 2 yrs the visibility was soo poor (20 metres) and flights and trains were abandoned and delayed..
Inspite of above what do you think..

Chits..
Have noted the contact numbers from your blog.. Thanks,

While negotiating with porters, make it also clear that they don't drink in the nights while on trekking and fix as to how much weights a porter will carry.

Before buying provisions for food, check at GMVN, Sankri whether food is available at Taluka and Seema. I feel that there may not be any need for you to cook food upto Seema.

Carry some quantity of assorted dry fruits in your pockets for munching while trekking .

It is one more reason against travelling in Bandra-Dehradun Express. This train will get the least priority over other trains like Shatabdi once fog clears.

It is always advisable to keep a day or two as extra day/s in any trekking schedule to take care of some unforeseen situations like fog/chakka jam .

@sadanand ... last year we were there in exactly same period (25 Dec on ward)...at Seema we have to cook own food as whole seema village was secluded ..everybody was in OSla..our guide called the guy from village and then we coked food from our own ration ..

atleast for DDN prefer Jan shatabdi as it run in day so it wont get late..for Bombay-Delhi route no idea..

Yes. I overlooked this possibility in winter.

Food may be available on Osla village even in winter but to trek 2+2 kms from Seema just for food may be too much.

Folks.. Some more clarifications asked by team members for HKD.

1) Does the team require 1 sack for personal belongings and 1 day pack for handy items for each person?? If yes, then how can he / she carry both together... If so the porters needs to be hired from Sankri itself...

2) For emergency needs, does one need to carry tents, sleeping bags, ice axe and ropes to HKD.. or wiling a hiling stick serve the purpose.

3) Do we need to pay for porters / guide's food & stay charges also or does that be included in the charges per day (approx rs. 250 per day)

rucksack 1 between 2 person
day pack individual
food item in another rucksack for everybody
yes hire porter from sankri or do this in order to save cost "hire pony till Seema and from Seema call porters for 2 day " HKD and back..we did this in order to cut cost...

tents/sleeping not required...ice-axe you can have one for emergency in case snow is hard ..ropes i dont think u will use..

porters and guide will eat with u their charges are excluding the food ..u have to have ration for them as well..and they eat much...

@ Chits, Almora and Sadanand.

I had a word with Khajan Singh and tentatively have booked him for pickup on 27th Dec from Dehradun to Sankri. He initially asked 3,500 one-way but I brought him down to 3,000 somehow over the phone. Is this rate ok, keeping in mind the off-season. Also asked Shah Travels (I got the details from this IM forum) but he quoted 4,000 one-way. I have asked Khajan Singh to help us get good guide and cheap accomodation at dormitory houses.

Any idea, if there is a economy accomodation available at Dehradun (near railway station for 27th night)..

I also have taken the number of Chandan Singh Rana and Shambu Rawat (guide). Do you think I shud contact them.. What can they help for??

Khajan Singh and Chandan Rana / Chain Rawat they all are same group.
Ask Khajan Singh to be there for you even on 27th night,he wont charge anything..we did the same...he came in night took all our luggage in the vechile and took us to a hotel he knew...that hotel was descent 500 for a night and in morning he took us to Sankri...

3000/- a bit extra ..never mind we booked in 2600..

Sankri/Taluka/HKD you will get GMVN ..rate are 150 for a dorm..take dormitory...

Guides and porter will be available through Chandan Rana..
Also insist on pony till Seema...that will save cost.
