Snow / Skiing Getaway from Mumbai
I'd like to take a short trip from Mumbai 4-5 (max 6 days) to see some snow and mountainous regions in India. I'd also like to do some beginner level skiing. Can anyone recommend a good itinerary I can use for my girlfriend and I? I'm a OK skiier, but she's never seen snow before. Is Sringar safe? What are my other options? Thanks

You need to fly from Mumbai to Srinagar (kashmir). Take a taxi to Gulmarg for the skiing.
Some info at: http://www.jktourism.org/cities/kash...ent/skiing.htm |

Narkanda is a safe option for Skiing.
Check out http://hptdc.nic.in/ for mumbai address and book a ski package which costs around 7000/person including stay on twin sharing basis. End Jan, early feb is a great time for skiing. |

The third option is Auli.

The problem with Auli is that you have to reach the base before 4pm. After that the ski lift which takes you to resorts closes down.
Second problem is roads. Roads in Uttaranchal are not as well maintained as Himachal, which is under defence care due to its strategic importance. Third thing is snow itself. Himachal always gets more snow than uttranchal. |

Hi,
Any way the plan can be same. I would suggest Manali (Solang nala slopes). You can fly all the way up to Kulu and then take a bus to Manali. You can do a few days skiing and get back hiring the equipment locally. This way you are at Manali quickly and also get to spend more time skiing. |

I'm only a beginner skiier, and not sure I want to ski every day, what would the best option be? Is there ice skating? shopping resort, etc at Manali?
Auli, I understand is expensive to fly to, and still requires a long bus ride from the airport, so my only options for a short vacation is Gulmarg or Manali, correct? The US state department recommends I stay away from Gulmarg. Again, I'm looking more for a winter resort, rather than just skiing. |
