Sleeping bag for the Milam Glacier trek?

Hi everyone,

I was reading through a few posts on this forum about the Milam Glacier trek, and a few of them noted that one "needs" a sleeping bag for hiking this trail. Not for camping, but to use at the huts and resthouses along the trail. I wasn't planning on bringing a sleeping bag to India - Is it true that the resthouses don't provide adequate bedding?

Just a simple question that will probably be answered quickly. Thank you.

i did not need it. i was comfortable with the bedding i got at the villages.

you can see some of the pics of the trek here:
http://almoraboy.blogspot.com/2007/0...home-page.html

and then decide if youare ok sleeping in the beddings provided in the village huts. i think i have soem of the pics of the places where i stayed.

however, i did buy a warm blanket/quilt from munsyari - just as an extra precaution for the trek - in case the villagers had 1 blanket less.

if you want, then blankets/quilts/sleeping bags can be arranged from munsyari itself.

good rest houses are not available in milam trek ( except that in the munsiyari),so you have to avail the most humble accomodations of panchayat rooms, or some village rooms, and they does not have any bedding provisions.thats why its necessary to carry sleeping bags and mattress in this trek.
moreover its always recomended to carry your own sleeping bag and mattress while in trekking in the Himlayas.

Thanks to the both of you for taking the time to respond. Two posts, two seemingly knowledgeble users, but two different answers. I guess I'm back at square one! Any other input from either of you?

In my opinion you should carry sleeping bag on this route...
for example we carry sleeping bag in pindari route and it really helps us ..on occassion we have taken PWD guest house as KMVN was already booked and they only have bed but no blanket so we used sleeping bag...

BTW whts ur itinerary for this trek?

Thanks chits007. I hiked the Pindari Glacier route last year, hauled along my sleeping bag, and didn't end up using it - thats why I posed this question. But then again, I think I was staying in the KVMN guesthouses each evening.

As for an itinerary, well I guess I'm just not that organized when it comes to things like this! All I know is that a friend is meeting me in Delhi this September, we'll get transport to the trailhead, and then we're going to take a few weeks to hike the trail leisurely. No gear, just staying in resthouses and villages along the way.

Thanks so much. Still wondering....

hi
you will find no such kmvn accomodation after Munsiyari, which is the end of the bus route. through out the trek you have to stay either in the panchayat halls(stone houses without any furniture) or in kutchha houses of abandoned villages. i will suggest for carrying sleeping bags & tents.
2 yrs back we went there, but had to abandon the trek after Rilkot ( 3 rd camp site, where we stayed in Indo Tibetan Border Police camps) because of landslides. though Milam is a very soft trek (as described in the guide books) still our experience says, one should always carry at least some basic gears ( like ropes and tents & sleeping bags) in any trek of upper himalayan region.
in this trek route we have crossed more than one streams which flows down to gushing Gouri Ganga. and after 2 days of incessant rain,on the third day when we were forced to abandon the programme and returned, we found those streams were turned fearsome, and felt the necessity of rope(which we didnt brought).
