the right season...
almoraboy
I understand your enthusiasm about exploring Kuti and Darma valleys and the time limits. But right now these two valleys are snow bound and inaccissible on foot. Permits will not be issued in this time of the year. Beyond Sobla/Dhar in Darma, and Chiyalekh in Byas valley, you can't proceed. Upper portions of these valleys are populated only from May to Oct. For Sinla pass Sept. is the right time. Narayan ashram officially closes between Dec and Feb. I think. Do check in KMVN, Dharchula for accurate information when u go there. Road conditions should be okay at this time. For exploring the region this is not the right time. all you can do is enjoy the season skiing and going for short day walks and bus/jeep rides to savour the winter landscape. |

hi there raj and the rest,
yeah u r right!!! i guess this time is not the right time to explore that area. still, i wil ltry to explore as much as possible. i guess this will involve skiing around munsiyari. then there r a few lakes above munsiyari, which i could not check out last time when i went to milam. so i will try that also. and kalamuni was an absolutely beautiful place. hey, kalamuni temple is liek a pass from where u enter the johar valley. i will try to spend some time there also. i guess there is a path that leads up from the temple to the top of the peaks in that region. u get a beautiful view from there also. then in the darma valley and byas valley, i will try to go uptil as far as i can. hey, will there be some snow at chiyalek top and narayan ashram at this time of the year? see, i have time from 25th of feb till 14th of march. by 14th eod, i have to be in delhi. so if there is some time left, can anyone suggest some other trek? i was thinking of roopkund. |

should i take a laptop along with me or not????
it will be good for transferring pics from the camera when i am in the hills. i can keep it locked up at the tourist rest centre while i am at munsiyari. and if i go trekking further up from dharchula, then the porter can carry it. it has a shock proof hdd. |

i have got 2 memory cards.
one is of 16 mb and can hold upto 36-37 pics (resolution = 1600*1200 pix, which is approx 2 megapix). the other is 128 mb and can hold upto 270 pics, same resolution. if i get extra memory cards, then i guess i need to get the mfrom delhi. any good place in delhi which sells memory cards?? also, i was wondering what is the cost of an 8 megapixel camera in the market right now?? do u get 8 MP resolution digital cameras in delhi?? |

In Delhi you can get memory cards from Palika bazaar, Gaffar mkt(karol bagh) and Nehru Place... No need to risk ur lappy.. (u will have to carry batteries for it too.. durin trekking
) .. Just take some alkaline spare batteries and u will be home.. ![]()

2500 MAh NIMH batteries are gud enuff for around 200-250 shots with the LCD on and little flash usage on my Canon A95. A quick charger like Uniross will charge the batteries in less than one hour. Duracell Ultra (for emergency when u run out of rechargeables) lasts around 150-180 shots. Post march 18 my plans are fluid.. Sikkim and Arunachal are enticing.. esp the Gurudongmar lake at 17,200 ft and then to Cho Lemu lake(one log lists the Cho Lemu is also motorable albeit a tough one) at over 18000 ft. However things will fall into place only after the completion of Bhutan leg of the ride by March 15th and the ground situation in Sikkim and NE(snow, security etc)... will keep updatin.. Cheers! ![]() |

hi all,
hey, i just phoned the munsiyari tourist rest centre today. they were telling me that there is still no snow at munsiyari and so no skiing ![]() . so i am thinking of changing my plans and heading for somewhere else where u can get lots of snow. my twin objectives are : great snow photography and skiing. so i was thinking of auli or dyara bugyal. can others throw some light on these two places?? |
