skiing in munsiary

hey, does anyone know if the skiing seaon in munsiary extends till february - march. i will be ending my course on 25th feb and plan to rush straight ot munsiary after that. any chances of getting to ski on the slopes or will the snow have melted by that time??

i remember that we sometimes even had snowfalls in late feb when i was a kid and stayed at nainital.

When i had visited Munsyari in March o5 (First Week) there was plenty of snow at Khalia Top. But facilities wise it is zero & you want find any one skiing there. But yes plenty of snow was there at that time.
Where is your course going on right now ? Auli is much better for skiing.
Although Munsyari has lot of potential but infrastructure is not there.

hi Almoraboy
I am planning to visit Munsiary about 15th Feb. Will see if any skiing possibilities are there. But as far as I know, there is no infrastructure in Munsyari. And the govt is thinking of developing it into a ski resort. Why don't you call KMVN tourist rest house, Munsiary?

i will most probably try to reach delhi on 25th. will try to take the morning flight from bangalore. then i am wonderting whether to take an afternoon bus to almora from isbt or to take the night train. flights r never on time and so night train seems a better option. so i will reach almora on 26th .. around 9 or 10 am. then i guess it wont e possible to go to munsiyari on that day itself. so i can just hang around the place or leave for bageshwar. anywyas, most prolly, i will reach munsiyari on the 26th. great to hear than snow is there in march also. hey raj, will u be there till that time? maybe we can check out some other nearby places like chiyalekh top, etc.

and yes, i talked to the ppl at the kmvn centre over there. they said that skiing depends on the amount of snowfall which is highly unpredictable. currently there is snow, but it is only a few inches deep. they need at least 3 feet of snow. and he said that kmvn does organise skiing. last year they did it in 3 diferent batches. he sounded pretty sure about it. well, if i find the time, i will ring him again and ask him.

thanks for ur hewlp guys.

chiyalekh and it's location

As far as I know, Chiyalekh is on the way to Gunji from Gala. I don't remember any place called by that name near Munsiary. From Munsiary, one can go for short treks to Kalia top, Betulidhar, Balati farm, Thamrikund etc. I am planning to visit my wife's native place Jauljibi in Feb...From there I want to visit Munsiary for 2-3 days. Would like to visit nearby places. I think I will be returning from Jauljibi on 24th Feb.

I think you are not opting for Delhi-Munsiary direct bus. I will take 24 hours. From Old Delhi station you can take 4-00 PM Intercity train( Uttaranchal Sampark Kranthi Exp.) to Kathgodam. It reaches the destination at 10-30PM. That night itself you can take a bus to Munsiary or the next day go to almora/ Bageswar. And the following day go to Munsiary leisurely.
Thesedays lot of snow accumulated near Kalamuni. a few days back the road was blocked again for 2 days.
I think when you go there the route will be open, in case if there is a problem go via Thal- Didihat-Ogla- Jauljibi-Madkot. A little detour and may take an extra day. But you will definitely enjoy the scenary. Change jeeps at Jauljibi. And also visit Nepal across the river Kali.

hi folks,

hey rajkumar, what i meant by munsiyari was the whole area around that place. yes, u r right about chiyalekh top. it is located on the kailas mansarover route. i was thinking of exploring munsiyari n nearby areas. i guess kalamuni will look wonderful i nwinters with all that snow. wonder ifthat old sadhu will still eb there in winters. then i was planning to head down the gori ganga till it meets the kali river. from there head up along the kali, till as far as i can go. let us hope there are good photo moments up there (in both green and white). ok, visiting nepal seems an interesting option. i will definitely try that out

Chiyalekh is as far as you can go without Inner line permit. And what I like is, in case you are going along Kailash Mansarovar route, why to go in winter season when beyond Chiyalekh there is only snow? and what I want to do is to go in the right season ie May-Oct and go as far as Kuti and Jolingkong. I think I will be visiting these areas atleast once in a year.
If you have time, from Munsyari, go along Goriganga, reach Jauljibi whare Kali meets Gori and go up towards Dharchula. From There go to Tawaghat or Narayan ashram by jeep. and from there trek along Kali river thru Budhi, Gala to chiyalekh. and come back. Ya, that's also a good idea. As for me, I want to go to Kuti valley in May/June.

india on planks

i'm the kinda guy who looks at snowcovered mountains the way that most men look at beautiful women. after months in africa, i am drooling at the prospect of ripping it up north, but am woefully unprepared. Are there any established places to rent skis or backcountry havens in mid feb?
anybody game to meet up and hit the slopes?

free the heels, babay!

Auli: 16 kms. from Joshimath is an ideal winter resort run by Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN). A 3 kms. long slope ranging from a height of 2519 mts. to 3049 mts. is a major attraction. The Auli resort run by GMVN has snow beaters which beat the snow to keep the slopes fit for skiing at all times. A 500 mts. long ski-lift carries skiiers back to the slope top, thus saving them the trouble and time to bridge up wearing long skis.
Season : End December to March
Equipment :
GMVN provides modern ski equipment. Participants are advised to bring heavy woolen clothing like caps, socks, gloves, mufflers, pullovers, trousers, wind proof jackets, dark glasses, gum/snow boots and a torch for personal use.
Package Tours :
GMVN conducts 7 and 14 days skiing courses at Auli and special provisions for day tourists are also available. Ski training is given by qualified ski instructors.

The scenic beauty from Dharchula to Tawaghat is awesome. Was there in last october. Tried to go Narayan Swami Ashram but could not bcoz of bad road.Just able to visitupto the NHPC Dam site. But the road specially the innumerous number of water falls from the both side of the road /river was simply something spectacular . Never seen so many water falls within a certain distance.

yeah, even i want to go to kuti village, but i guess it will not be populated at this time of the year. also, i might not get the iner line permit at this time of the year. or will i?? what docs do u have to show to get the inner line permit??

waise, even i wanted to do this route: head along dhauli ganaga from sobla to bedang, tidang, duktu, dantu uptil sipu village. from there visit the ancheri tal. then come back and cross the sin la pass to reach parvati tal and choto kailash. then go to kuti and finally head down to where kuthi yankti meets the kali river. then do some explorations of nabhidank and om parvat, and maybe even check out lipulekh pass. then finally head down along hte kali to dharchula.

the other option was the same route as above, but in the reverse direction. so i wold have explored the kuthi valley first, and darma valley later.

but i have time right now, and not later. our mba will be gettin over by 24th feb. so i will be in blore in 25th morning. might take the early morning flight (5 am) to delhi or even the one after that. so i will be in delhi by 10 am. then will keep my stuff ta some relative's place and head with just 1 bag + camera to almora. from there to munsiyari. there i will have time till 12th or 13th march, coz i have to reach calicut by the 16th for convocation. and afte the convo, on the 18th, i can head back to the hills again , coz i guess joining dates in the companies will be sometimes in mid-april.
