Hi all,
We planning to go Skiing either to Auli or Solang in Feb'08. It would be our first time, so we need to learn as well. Which according to you'll is a better place Auli or Solang. Solang reaching is less painful as compared to Auli. Any suggestions on Hotel at both places and a tutor for skiing and approx costs.. thanks Amar |

Hi Amar,
Had been to Auli in Feb 05. Did try sking for one day. But it's tough to learn in one day. We did it for fun. We paid Rs. 400 - 500 per person for full day including all equipments & instructors charges. There are many instructors available there & you can go there & hire them. However if you want to do a course (Three day or more) then you will have to plan in advance. Staying options at Auli are few infact just two. One is KMVN & other is Cliff top (Affliated with Club Mahindra). We were put up at Joshimath which is a 20 - 30 mins. cable car ride from Auli. There are plenty of options to stay at Joshimath. We stayed at Hotel Kamet (which is a budget hotel). At that time there was plenty of snow. KMVN offers some packages including sking & stay, do check that out on their website. Not been to Solang so no info. Gulmarg is another option for Sking. Ronak. |

Auli - Not KMVN but GMVNL
My knowledge says Auli is in Uttrakhand within Garhwal area. Auli details can be found in www.gmvnl.com. Book your rooms online for safety. Not sure if skiing can be done now as the skiing camps florish during march - may. But you can get some good pics of snow fields which were green during summer now turn snow covered. Also try the cable car for some good pics, the charges are Rs. 300 per pax. |

I have been both to Auli and Solang in winters and I think I enjoyed Auli much better - having said that I am no technical expert on skiing and snow - but overall experience at Auli ws much better.

Narkanda
Narkanda above Shimla has North Facing slopes so you will find very good snow conditions here. Maybe the best of the lot. Skiing is a regular feature here and vehicles go all the way up.
I have not been there in winter, so i am not saying this from first hand experience.

Tourist season
Its a regular feature in the season. There is no ski lift. But vehicles ply most of the way. No formal school like Auli exists, but many instructors are there for the tourists. Again, I haven't been there in winter... but was invited by one trek guide who also arranges skiing.

There are Ski Chairs & also Ski Lifts (I am not sure if ski lift is the right name, it's like - there is one rod which you put between your legs with your skis on & then you get pulled up the slope)
Ski chairs can be used by any body but for using the other you need a little bit of experience. The charges are per trip basis, however if you are signing up for the course they will allow you to use it for free. Ronak. |
