Hi

Just back after doing this wonderful mesmerising walk ... we started from Shimla and rched baghipul, drve up the completed road to Kullu Sarahan and spent the night there, absolutely fantastic. One of my favorite places in Himachal. The next day we drove all the way to Jaoon from Kullu srahan 2-3 hrs upon how dos one drive. Thats the base of the yatra. Its a new road especially made after a lot of pilgrims are doin the yatra each year. This year the yatra starts on July 14th. From Jaoon its a good wlk but uphill to singhgad ( approx 3kms I guess. It took us about an hour to reach). We stayed at Jaon but realised Singhgad wa a better option as we had to walk quite a bit next day to reach Bhim Dwar. The walk is all the way very steep to Kalighati rewarding for the grand views. Descending from Kalighati we negotiated a difficult path up and down to reach Bhimdwar. From Jaon it tok us approx 8 hrs. The next day its a great walk from Bhim Dwar meadow to Nain Sarovar at the base of the peak. Stunningly beautiful. The climb was arduous but worth the effort, to reach Srikhand Mahadev 5227mts. We stayed a while atop and then walked all the way back to Bhimdwar. Took us approx 6hrs back induldging in a lot of revelry. The walk from Bhimdwar to top was a 8hrs thing starting early morning at 6. Reaching in the night we were tired and not even maggi to eat. Relied on babaji's chappati (interesting experience). From Bhimdwar to Jaoon it was easy and we drove from there to Gushaini t meet Mr Raju who suggested us in doin the Gushaini to Neuli walk. Yes indeed he is the best resource for any information on the area. Its a good walk (Srikhand Mahadev) and July August you will definitely meet a lot of pilgrims. Cheers |

Snow on Shri Khand Mountains
We have just finished a walk to the Shri Khand yesterday between 9th August 2007 and 12th August 2007. We trekked from Jeori Side, could drive upto 2 KM away from Phancha and had to walk thereafter.
First night halt in the Samej/ Sarpara Khad and next one in the temporary shelter being run by the Shepherds cum priests, last camp, 70 persons in a room of 10 feet by 12 feet, barely able to sleep, men women sharing camp trying to sort out legs. Lot of persons walking barefoot. Early morn walk on 11th August 2007 and reached the peak by 10.30 AM, fast local hill men/boys/women in half the time. Back to foal, shepherds hut the same day, heavy rain throughout the night and had to sit instead of lying down to avoid wet grass under the tent. Walked back to Phacha on 12th, long haul, had to walk beyond Kandri, last road head as the road was full of slush making the movement of vehicles impossible. |

Snow on Shri Khand Mountains
snow on Shri Khand not such a big deal , rain a bigger nuisance with lot of steep slippery slopes and likelihood of losing the way in fog.
Snow is always expected at height but shall not be more than 2-5 cm s during July August. Sept 2nd fortnight can be daunting. |

Snow on Shri Khand Mountains
Monsoon officially ends on 20th September though there were massive floods during 1987 a week thereafter. Problem is that the withdrawal of monsoons is accompanied by increasing incidences of snowfall in the mountains and the chances of sleet and snow instead of rain become significant starting first week of September.
Local pilgrims stop by third week of August and the shepherds/priests also withdraw as the pilgrimage dries up. This trek has to be carefully planned during the lulls between the monsoon rains and a clear weather prediction for three to four days can be adequate to get most satisfactory views. In case logistics can be taken care of and support from the pilgrims and related bhandaras( voluntary free food stalls for pilgrims) is not required 10th Jun -20th Jun period before the start of the holy maces may be great idea, just a conjecture based on my Bara Bhangal trek, no first hand experience. It would off course require better preparation for handling snow and ice which melts like wax under the onslaught of the warm monsoon rains. |
