Short treks (2-6 days) in North India - where to go

Hi,
I am going to north India in the end of October.
I am planning to do some treks. Unfortunatelly, I have not so much time, so I want to make some shorter trek (s).
Would you recomend an area (state) where to go, where I can do any good treks without guides, without crowds of poeple, where I can visit some villages, monasteries, ...
Thanks for your tips !!

For monasteries and short treks go to Spiti via Manali or by the lesser known and more scenic Shimla route. You have not mentioned "how short" trek or what "lesser" time you have at hand.

Thanx.. I found some links about Spiti - looks great

Hi Avid,
Thanks for your tip..
I want to spend about 7 days in this area - would be nice to make a trek to some remote monastery (or 2 shorter treks).
I have one more question, is possible to rent a tent in Spiti (Manali) ?

I found some good websites with treks, maps, monasteries, etc around Manali and Spiti area. It could be useful ..

Manali is the best place for hiring people and eqpmt for trekking. Do your treks after touching Manali.

Avid,
was wondering if you could elaborate on this "lesser known" shimla route. Sounds enticing.

thanks for the info.
will be in shimla tomorrow and will look into treks from there. Would like to go to ki but it seems far from shimla. Is it possible to still organise treks from manali and go around the other way. It seems as though manali is better set up for trekking. I suppose I will have a better idea once I get there but any advance advice would be great. thanks all

It is pretty cold here in shimla. i have to wear a fleece and hat at night. i'm sure manali will be colder and have heard that it has had its first snow. the locals all say winter has come early - be prepared for snow. rohtang pass is definitely closed.

Orchard Huts in Chamba

For a short trek and a real low altitude Himalayan experince, why not try Orchard Huts, a family run place that has really good guides to take you off the beaten trak in the hills around. No other tourists at all in the hills behind their hut. Also the Huts themselves are lovely with excellent food. Go to Chamba and find Mani Mahesh Travels oposite the Laxmi Naryan temple complex and go from there. Also Orchard Huts is at 1220m so not too cold. Also it is near Pathankot so is good for access by train. Cuts down on the 'overnight bus' problem.

Basho, thanks for the advice - I definitely have chamba on the itinerary and will also be doing some treks there. But think I will leave it till later in the month or early nov as the weather wont be as problematic. Do you or anyone know if there are buses to chamba from manali or must I go through dharamsala? Will head up to manli in a couple of days and see what options are available for trekking - looks like the spiti valley is out for now. Another option is to head to the kinnaur valley from shimla but getting to spiti is even hard from that side - all is good though - india is proving fantastic.

Hi jmcquoid!

There's no direct road from Manali to Chamba, only a walking track over the Manali Pass at 4880m which will almost certainly be closed.

You will have to take a bus from Manali via Mandi to Dharamsala and then on to Dalhousie for Chamba. There used to be a very scenic 2 day walk from Dalhousie (1968) along trails to Chamba through Khajjiar, but my current map shows a road there now! Still, the road might follow a different route, as often happens. There's accommodation at Khajjiar for the overnight stop.

You could also go into Kinnaur and Spiti from Shimla by bus or taxi - the road doesn't go over any high passes, the only obstacle being the landslide near Maling, not far from Nako, where you have to walk a bit. If you're going into Spiti you will need to have an Inner Line Permit.

I doubt very much that the pass will be open. Even if it were, you would then have the problem of coming back to Manali. You could well be stranded in Keylong for the rest of the winter, unless you are experienced in high altitude trekking through deep snow!

You really need to consider some low level trekking either around the Kullu Valley, or in Kinnaur or Spiti, which are accessible from Shimla.
