The YHAI ( India ) organizes the Saurkundi Pass trek .
It is a beautiful trek across lovely meadows . The meadow called " Maylee Thatch " is very scenic !! The highlight of the trek are the views of : Indrasan DeoTibba & Friendship Peak Manali town Hanuman Tibba The Saurkundi Pass is best vantage point to see the very technical Indrasan Peak . The entire trek to Deo Tibba Base Camp via Seri can also be seen from the Pass . |

The YHAI Trekking Brochure shows a basic route map .
However, this simple hand-drawn map has very few details . It is certainly not enough ! As I "walked" this introductory trek , I have some first-hand details that may help . The first 2 days include Segli & Hora Thatch ( there are no significant views as of now ).The third day was camping on Maylee Thatch which is definitely better . The "Saur" or "Lake" near the crest of the Pass is typically semi-frozen . On reaching the top , you see the entire Upper Kullu Valley and peaks in front of you. No doubt, the view is amazing . Longa Thatch is right on the range opposite Deo Tibba and Indrasan Peaks . If you turn 360 degrees , you very clearly see the Panorama of Kullu : Hanuman Tibba , Friendship Peak , Deo Tibba , Indrasan , Ali Ratni Tibba , Peaks of Lahaul and the entire road stretch from Manali to Rohtang Pass . The two big peaks that tower over the Lahauli village of "Khoksar" can also be clearly seen . The Hamta Nallah and the trek over Hamta Pass is also visible . Two more downhill days before you hit the Kullu- Manali Highway . This is a rather gentle trek but gives a " reward greater than effort " . |

Greetings to all those undertaking the Saurkundi Pass Trek in the summer season of 2007 in the Kullu Himalaya .
I led the YHAI group ( the very first group of the first ever crossing of Saurkundi ) as one of the 2 group leaders . I thoroughly enjoyed this program as it is a gentle trek but gave a real feast for the eyes : the entire Kullu Himalaya Panorama is before you from the top of the Pass ( including the area surrounding Yankar Pass ). However , you need somebody in the group that understands the geography of the region rather well and especially identify Peaks accurately and intrepret your surroundings ... then your fun is doubled ... I shall take your concerns by turn : 1./ What should I keep in mind ? Reply : On Day 1 , you will commence your trek from a nondescript point at a road head in Kullu Valley. YHAI will drop your group by a local bus at this road head . A few hours of easy ascent will take you through a small cluster of houses . There is a small ancient temple enroute ( where there is a gigantic fallen tree : the tree is almost a 100 feet in length ... its huge ) Make sure you do not enter the temple premises with any leather (belt , shoes , waistpouches) because the villagers take deep offence ! You will spend the night at Segli . YHAI has put their camp about 10 minutes short of the Segli ( its a cluster of wooden houses ). On Day 2 , you walk up to Hora ( some stretches are steep and on soft ground through coniferous trees ). As I mentioned earlier : no vistas open up as yet . Today's going up is mildly stiff . On your way to Maylee Thatch , arguably the loveliest meadow enroute , the route may pass over a patch of snow ( post 23rd May , this may have melted away ). Maylee ( this is a subjective opinion ) is very pretty ! I liked it because the big range in front is dazzlingly spectacular and was heavily laden with snow . Your walk to Davra Thatch has long march on snow but only after few hours of leaving Maylee behind . Spend a cold night at Davra , enjoy the snow outside the camp . If you descend 100 metres from you campsite , there is a icy stream in the gorge below coming from the surrounding snows . Later I found that this stream originates from the small "tarn" ( in Hiking Vocabulary a "tarn" is a "pond" that could be a glacial pond as well )near the Pass ( the "Saur " ) We walked up to the Pass ( not so stiff ! ) and were amazed at the view in front . Deo Tibba and Indrasan dominate the Kullu Panorama . Deo Tibba is the bulky peak and Indrasan is the big peak with a needle like summit . ( carry binoculars ! ) Your descent to Longa thatch will take you near a cluster of Juniper Trees . You are bang opposite Deo Tibba . There is a fairly steep downhill to the camps below before you hit the road . ****************** 2./ morever,do u think i would encounter snow at such a later date??? Well, do not expect too much snow ( unless there is a freak snowstorm in the summer ). But you will walk on snow ! You shall enjoy sliding on snow as you descend further away from the pass towards Longa Thatch . The Pass cannot be 100 % dry ( devoid of any snow ) in May because it has a moderate elevation . Go for this trekking programme to see the peaks ... Unlike the Har-Ki-Dun region ( where YHAI conducts a program as well ) , this Pass may not receive freak snow storms ... And yes the top of the pass is marked with a "cairn of stones". For us , there was no snow here , but further down we managed to do a good deal of snow sliding . best of luck and have a great time crossing Saurkundi Pass ! ******************* |
