Thumbs up

you can call at this number - 09412966171, this guy's name is Mannu Rawat, he lives in Mana, he can tell you the latest reports about weather and permit matters etc.

When I went in June 2008, he was my guide, he arranged everything - utensils, stove, porters etc. He has a grossery shop in Mana, and he is a well known person to the checkpost guys. We didn't need any type of permit or paper work as we took him as a guide and the checkpost officers belives him so well that they didn't ask for any permit.

You can refer our name to him as 'Roy Sahab'/'Chatterjee Sahab', he called us by that name .

Happy trekking.

Please be advised of heavy snowfall in the general area:

Better to check conditions from Joshimath before applying for permits.

Satopanth Tal Trekking

Hi Dilliwala !

So nice of you for getting me informed. Now I am in a confused situation to whether we should proceed towards Joshimath. Since there is a landslide upfront Mana then we have to use the other side of Alankananda which is much tougher.

Can you suggest some alternative route which is challenging as Satopanth Tal. Please do not take into consideration of Roopkund which I have already done.

Satopanth Tal is approached thru the Alaknanda valley. The landslide between Mana and Ghastoli ((Saraswati valley) doesn't affect your route.

These are the first snows of the season, usually causing some havoc. The weather shud settle down in a day or two and things will normalise. Which is why I suggested proceeding to Joshimath for a thorough check of the situation. I wud go (subject to no worsening of situ in next few days), but you have to decide for yourself whether you shud or not.

Try Kedartaal and Thalaysagar Base camp. ...At this time it would be one hell of a challenge. Kedar taal would have thigh high snow after this precipitation

Hi Dilliwala/ Ashutosh69,

Can you please let me know whether Movie Camera is allowed in Satopanth Tal Route ?

Just now I have been informed that they are not allowing any sort of camera in this route. Now all preparations are made for our journey and suddenly we come to know of this bad news.

Could you throw some light in this respect to whether the authorities are allowing cameras in the Satopanth Tal region ?

You would understand that we would be carrying whole sort of equipments upto Joshimath and then we have to leave our cameras with the hotelwalas. How pathetic it would be !!!!!

Waiting for your information eagerly

Bhaskar

could anybody post a reply with information about Handy Cam not being allowed in Satopanth Tal route. Also we have come to know that not only Handy Cam even photography is strictly prohibited in the area.

Bhaskar

My understanding is that photogrpahy is strictly prohibited in trekking routes requiring inner line permits.

Hmm, good Qs, Bhaskar.
Fact is, on my walk Mana-Vasudhara last year, I carried a camera without hindrance. There was also no mention of a ban on the Mana notice-board I have mentioned earlier, so far's I'm concerned I carried it and took photos legally. There was no check of any kind at Mana, anyone cud have carried anything they wanted. If it's the same this year,.....leave rest unsaid . Just keep any cameras/handycams under wraps while at Mana.

Sadanand is right that wherever an ILP is required, there is a general ban on carrying cameras. However, Vasudhara is outside the inner line - no permit required to go there and back. Go past and you're inside the inner line - the irony is that the last police post is back at Mana !
So, what to do?

I must stress that my info is from '07, no idea if it has changed. Maybe Supratim can advise.

It's also a moot point whether being opposite the Vasudhara fall on the right bank of the Alaknanda (Satopanth route) counts as being at Vasudhara . If not, technically one is already in the inner line as soon as one crosses the Alaknanda at Mana and moves past the temple on the other side (I forget the name).
