Panpatia Col Crossed

Started a New thread on the Crossing of the Panpatia Col. We have recorded the 1st Indian crossing of the Panpatia Col (altogether 2nd after martin Moran's team in 2000) on 8-9th June '07 through a new route avoiding the Icefall.. A new thread started on that. Yo can get some details in that.

Wish the pictures were without the date / time stamp on them!!! Stunning views of the mountains and streams.

Cheers,
Aadil.

I have just returned from Badrinath and Mana 2 days ago. Did the walk to Vasudhara as well.
Contrary to what has been written earlier about not requiring a permit to go upto Satopanth Tal, I have to report that there is a police sign-board in the middle of Mana village (at the fork where one path goes to Bhim Pul, the other to Ganesh and Vyas Guphas) which clearly states that visitors are allowed to go only upto Vasudhara and Vyas Gupha, respectively, without a permit. For any one wanting to go beyond, a permit is required, which will be checked at Mana itself.
It may be that because there is no check-post at Vasudhara along the way to Satopanth Tal that it is felt that no permit is required, but this wud technically be a breach of the regulations, as per the sign-board.
However I was told by locals that the Badrinath Temple Committee and the Mana police post are authorised to give permission as well for treks to Satopanth Tal. During the pilgrimage season of course. In the off-season, a permit is required from the DM/SDM for all visitors to go beyond the Police Check-post at Hanumanchatti (11 km before Badrinath).

Thumbs up

I'm not saying that Satopanth Taal (16000 ft. approx) in October is not possible, but chance of fresh snowfall is very very high and continuing on snow on that route will be quite tough.

If possible try to pre-pone your schedule at end of September of first week of October.

I will recommend that you make a call at this number 09412966171. This is the number of Mannu Rawat, our guide and probably the best guy for Satopanth. He is a local of Mana village and can tell you the exact situation in October. You can refer my name to him as "Roy Sahab" and he will help you as much as possible that's for sure.

We are a group of seven planned from Kolkata going to Satopanth Tal in 2nd Week of October'08. Could we get confirm news about permission to be taken from DM, Joshimath is compulsory. We are constantly trying to communicate with the available Mob. Nos of various guides but they are misleading us. Even one of them have quoted Rs. 1000/- per day per person when asked about their rates. As regards porters they have quoted Rs. 500/- per day per person.

We are very much confused. Could anybody give us some concrete idea.

Do anyone have complated Satopanth Tal / Suraj Kund trek lately ? If yes, then keep us informed about snowfall, weather, local permissions, etc.

bhaskar, I hope you went thru this thread and the others showing at the bottom of the page, there's loads and loads of info around. Also, I had hoped that someone other than me wud reply, but here goes -

I have listed on a previous page the info I have about going to Satopanth. supratim's report from this summer differs. You have to pass thru Joshimath anyway, best is to directly enquire at the SDM's office.

I haven't seen any new trip-reports very recently, but in any case they wud be irrelevant for weather reports - by the time you go it can be vastly different. Better to check on this 1 or 2 days before.

Dilliwala,

Thanks all the same. I just wanted to have some fresh report on Satopanth Tal before our journey for satisfaction. Rest all depend on luck.

Have a good day.
