last year the airtel store in leh was recommending a general store 2 shops down from Yasmin Tours on Fort Road selling sim cards without addresses/ proof. I bought one and after a few tries - stay in the shop to test it out - it worked fine. I only lasts for 1 month till you have to really do the formalities - but by then most people have moved on anyway

Captain,

Arbitrages don't last.

Bombus,

Your call - literally. Its a job interview. Reason enough to be a bit paranoid

sat phones

Any INMARSAT based sat. phone should work in the area. Usually army uses these phones in the border areas. As Tapovan is not a restricted area, there should not be any problem carrying and using them.

Not enquired for a long time but Sat-Phones are very expensive to use. I think they can cost upto £30 (RS2400) per minute to use.

Maybe the OP simply means mobile phone?

A bit late this:
Sudhir, only BSNL will work at Gangotri - not further.

Hi,
Last year I got signal just before the shops at Chirbasa. In between you miss it. What's it like now I am not sure.

Using a satellite phone in a remote area can land you up in trouble. You may have the phone confiscated by the authorities.

Enjoy your trek sweetheart. Phones can be with you when you are in the city. Why go trekking, if you want your phone to come along with you?

There is no need of SETTELITE PHONE in Tapoban. But we donot know why you want to have one. Although this is not restricted area but still you can land up in serious trouble due to this.
Settelite phones are not much costly now. Very easiy available in India [ Aprrox 25,000 INR ] but operational cost is different. It comes to almost 600 INR/ minute. but you have to have a license from HOME MINISTRY to use this.

I think you wanted to say about simple CELL PHONE. They may work but not upto TAPOBAN. BSNL is your best bet !!
