It seems the Nepal army are shooting people on the Singali ridge. Read this thread.
Also you are from Kolkata. Please post latest info abt this if you have sources / friends in Darjeeling.

Hell...that does seem as bad news. But being here in Kol. I haven't heard anything of the sort, considering it would make decent news if the risk was considerable.
Anyways thanx...i'll try and find out more and post in. |

I need to know how much it'll cost me to go to Sandakphu from Siliguri and back. I also need to know how does one book the night stopover places on the way to Sandakphu. And how do u get a booking at the DGHC guest house. And a cost estimate alongwith all this would be great.I'm on a tight budget. So the cheapest would suit me best. ![]() Last edited by Dilliwala : Oct 28th, 2008 at 04:18. Reason: merged thread |

Hi,
This may help you: Destination Sandakphu-Falut Me and my friend did the same trekk Calcutta to Calcutta it was 2200.00/man. I am Not sure about the rent for the Porters/guides right now. You can book DGHC huts from here: http://www.holidayhomeindia.com/tif_eng_ban_1.htm (This is a very useful link.) My experience says it will be better if you leave it upto your porter. DGHC will push you to stay at Tumling but as per the suggstn of our guide, Tunglu was better for the night halt. Babu can help you by providing latest info. Thanks, - Somnath |

but as u mentioned the path to dzongri -goechala.......this path differentiates from the singalila pass trek path from a indian border police check post after crossing singalila pass into sikim, named CHIYABHANJANG. Its just on the border. from here the conventional path turns right to go eastward in sikim and the path for goechala continues straight into Nepal. I have heard that this path is beautifully wild and goes thro' villages of nepal for next 3days to reach bakhim or dzongri.this was the intended path for your friend. And most probably the incident also occered in this path. now, at that police post in 2004 we have heard that the trails going west ward are entering into Maoist villages and they have to keep serious watch on intrusion. Truly, this region is sensitive for both the countries so your friend did the right thing by avoiding to go in the path. (I also got depressed by not seeing an opportunity to go there in recent future). and for the person died its really really sad. But still I don’t think that there is any danger to go upto phalut or even crossing the singalila pass except the danger of trekking (and definitely of falling in love with Kanchendzonga). I know a person very closely....who have been in Kamet summit expedition and eventually climbed its sister peak Mt AbiGamin.... had taken a team upto singalila pass in march-april 2005. I will ask him tonight and inform in the forum. anyway its always advisable to go there after through query....atleast in current political situation. and hey laterally inclined, stay inclined towards your plan.... and do check the PersonalMessage that i have send u. check this thread of mine to get some info abt Sandakphu - phalut... http://www.indiamike.com/india/showt...95#post970 95 babu |

Yes, at tumling(Nepal) sikhar lodge, which is run by a lady, is a good place to have late lunch (at around 1-2pm.... it will take time to reach tumling from manebhanjang). tonglu(India) is in different route.... if one goes to tonglu he will miss the lunch at sikhar. and if someone is trying to reach sandakphu in 2 days then better to move ahead. stay at tumling ir better at Joubari 2km from tumling, in nepal. There is also cozy one place to stay and have nice dinner.

when i visited last in end feb 2004 we were free to go anywhere. avid said in one post that someone has been killed in that region some months ago....one can follow that post also in trekking forum. that may not be on the sandakphu trail.... there are paths to dzongri (thru' Nepal) from toyephulebhanjang, after crossing phalut and singalila pass....the assassination may have happened there. |
