Rudranath Trek

Hi everybody,
I am planning to Trek to Rudranath & Kalpeshwar. Can anyone give me suggestions on how to proceed? I just returned from Madmaheshwar and Deoria Tal trek, so I am more or less ready, physically!
Thanks

Dont attempt from Sagar or Mandal (Anusiya Mata temple side). Thsi side is very tough. Mandal is at 15000m while Nauli pass whcih needs to be crossed before reaching Rudranath is at around 3950m.

Start from kalpeshwar. That would be an easier option.

Well I disagree, I have done this personally and I would recommend that this a better route than coming via kalpeshawar -dumuk and bansinarayan. The OP has already attempted successfully Madhmaheshwar so in my opinion he can do Kalpeshwar. The Anusuya route is not well marked but is not treacherous, though the difficulty is that Mandal to Anusuya is a very short trek and then continuing on directly to Rudranath makes a very long day. Sagar-Panar-Rundranth is the easier on but both the routes are easier than the Helang-Kalpeshwar-Bansinarayan-rudranath route.

My reco is
1. Take a guide/porter -some one who knows the route
2. If you cannot trek 18 kms in a day (distance from Anusuya to Rudranath) then take the Sagar-Panar-Rudranth route - it kinds of splits the 2 day trek into two equal halves
3. Nice to keep a tent as other than the hotels at Anusyua and Panar the only other acco on route is shepherd's huts which are also far and few. Also keep some dry snack as unlike the MM route there will be very few places to stop

Thanks Spicetrekker for the info. I think I will take the Sagar-Panar-Rudranath route and come back via Anusuya to Mandal/Gopeshwar and proceed to Kalpeshwar via Hellong/Urgam. But can u give me any info on when temple will close down at Rudranath in 2009?

Spice,

All I can say is that probably you maintain very physical ability and consequently might find Rudranath from Mandal side as easy.

I did this trek in July this year just 2 days after my successful trek to Ronti saddle. So, I was well acclimatised, fully toned for any climb. Even then it was not easy. It's a continuous climb once you cross the Atri Muni Cave. Personally I wont recommend this route to anybody.

1. BTW, chances of getting lost on this route are not much as there is a clear trail thorughout the trek.
2. Tents are not needed. There are shepherd huts on the way where you can stay and they offer you food. I had one of the best breakfast of Paratha with freshly made Butter and tea in the Dhaba.
3. There is also the Ashram of Sitaram Babaji where you can stay. But carry your own food/ration. Babaji will provide you firewood to cook.

I have not said that nor did I mean to say that this is easy. It is all relative so I have said the Mandal route is easier than the the Kalpeshwar- Bansi Naryan route in my opinion. So just to clarify specially to the OP, in my opinion in increasing degree of difficulty the the routes are as foll:
1. Sagar-Panar-Rudranath
2. Mandal-Anusuya-Rudranath
3. Kalpeshwar-Bansi Narayan-Rudranath

I agree that tents are not required but I think it is a safe as many of the shepherds hut close down in late sept-oct but agreed this is not a must but just and added precaution

I agree that the route is not well laid out from the Mandal side that is the reason to suggest a guide/porter who has done this earlier

As for my fitness levels i am a city slicker so not too much to write home about, but yes I did Rudranth as a part of the Panchkedar itinerary and I had already done Kedar, Madhmaheshwar, Tungnath in the preceeding 10 odd day before attempting Rudranth so I guess I was acclamitised

Murli: Not to scare you but on the Anusuya side there are dense forests and the guides may mention that there is likely hood of bears though I did not see any

Agree.. Its a dense jungle. I did saw a big herd of deers though no bears. There was one Sadhu baba from Maharashtra who was doing the 4 dham and panchkedar on foot all alone. He did mentioned me that he has come across a bear cub on the Rudranath trail.

I wouldn't prefer posting the phone number of the guide on the open forum. My past experiece with a guide whose number I had posted on IM had spoilt him to the extent that he has become completely careless and that caused death of a trekker in Kalindi pass this year.

Pls send me a private message and I would reply to it. Incidentally your current settign dont allow me to send you a private messages.
