Thumbs up October 24th onwards....

Oct 24th onwards your options are severely limited in the Himalayas. Annapurna circuit and eastwards anywhere upto Bhutan is where you could go.

The parts to the west would be under snow by this time. The High Passes and places in Uttaranchal and Himachal are completely out of question for trekkers. Even mountaineering expeditions return by 20th October.

Ladakh is a viable option if you are prepared to fly in and fly out of Leh. Roads to Ladakh may or may not be closed by 10th October due to fresh snow.

AvidTrekker, why so sad news from you and also Babuchand?! Is it really that bad? Why some agencies on the web and some people say it is possible? Just to attract people? Or they were just lucky?

It was Ladakh that we crossed out as impossible since it is even more northwards than HP and Uttaranchal... (though LP says Singge La -Lamayuru is doable till late October). Well, food for thought...

Anyway, thanks for your advice!

Cool Ladakh is do-able

Maybe to attract customers. Zero trekking knowledge. Most [98 %] of agencies give e-mail replies sitting in air-conditioned offices in Delhi. They have absolutely NO idea about trekking. Once they get a customer, they simply "outsource" the client to some other outfit, which may be even worse.

Ladakh has many routes do-able till late November if you are willing to bear the cold [minus 15 Celsius in November] and if you are willing to fly in and fly out.

Yesterday my friends and me came together, discussed all info we had and finally sadly decided to skip the Roop Kund trek this time (no use risking to stay out of it or be blocked somewhere in the middle of nowhere) and go to Dzongri instead. Babu (very nice travelogue about Sandaphu!) and AvidTreker (searched Ladakh - amazing, would love to do it some time, but not at minus 15C!), thanks a lot for your advice and ideas! You are doing a great job! See you on other threads!

You are welcome.

My secret ambition is to do the coldest trek of them all in India.... the Chadar trek in Ladakh.

This involves trekking on the solidified surface of the frozen river Zanskar in February. Day temps 4 deg C & night temps minus 25 deg C

Wanna come?

Well, I wouldn't do it at minus 15, but minus 25C sounds challenging!
Though when I was a student (gosh, 20yrs ago!) Latvia University organised regular skiing treks during winter holidays in the Caucasus and even Urals (former USSR). Normally we slept in shepherd huts where u could make fire, but one night was a "cold night" - out in the tent in the snow. It was minus 20. But in the Urals day temps were around minus 20 (minus 30-35 at night). But it did not feel as cold as the same temp in Latvian winters because the air is dryer in the Urals (more continental).
As you see - I am still alive and trekking! So I'll keep my fingers crossed for your ambitious plan and look out for your travelogue about it!

Good luck!

You are Welcome!!!

This [August Sept 2005]seems to be the lucky period for IMer's trekking.

ALL of them so far have reported successful treks!!!

I bet vistet will come up trumps too.... he's still in the Himalaya...

Keep it up, trekkers!

ROOP KUNd and JUARI PASS are not safe in Ocotber mid week onwards.
A little change in weather can decide difference between life and death as there is no effective rescue or any help anywhere.

I think everyone has it's own lines of safety and thrill....and this explains quest for more and more...in trekking and climbing like sports.

I do not go with the comment of ' company of bones' -but again it depends upon how every we see something.

I found ROOP KUNd and KUARI PASS trails very much enchanting and refreshing.

LATEST: I was at LOAHJANG 11.9.2005 -road conditions are very very bad from GWALDAM onwards. Get a good jeep from either GWALDAM or KARAN PARYAG.
This could be a bone chilling ride.
OPTION: Travel upto NANDA PARYAG and then take jeep upto SUTOL and trek to WAN via KUNOL.

WAN has got road now but jeeps goes upto KULLING only.
Weather plays very important role here-be carefull and well prepared.

GUIDES,TENTS,PORTERS/PONIEs are required.

Bedni Bugyal will be under deep snow in February. Trekkers have seen snow there as late as May.
