Roopkund Trek

Roopkund Trek is not a tea house trek. You will have to take guide and/or porters with tents, food etc. It is often described on the net. Google a bit, spend some time on the net.... you will get all your info. After this, if you still have specific questions, i'll be glad to answer.

If you are a beginner on his/her FIRST TREK, Roop Kund is not for you.

Cool Roopkund on Nat Geo

I saw the Roopkund documentary on National Geographic last Sunday. What can I say... it was superb.

The scientists studied the heaps of bones at Roopkund and also found a body with frozen FLESH on it. Radio Carbon dating plus DNA analysis gave some very interesting conclusions. It seems they were a family group [DNA closely related] going somewhere. The bones were 1100 Years old!. It seems they were hit by a hailstorm which had tennis-ball sized hailstones. They all died [more than 400 ppl]. A local Garhwali song corroborates these findings.

It was fantastic. Nat Geo will repeat it, for sure!!!

ROOP KUND is not for first timers-this is correct.
I would suggest you to consider this trail which will be good and learning for walking in mountains-

TREKKING: Wan-Kunol-Sitel-Ravni-Jhniji-Pana-KUARI PASS-Auli
OPTION: You can also reach SITEL via NANDPARYAG-GHAT-SITEL

TENTS,PONIES AND GUIDE IS REQUIRED !!

I think much has been said about ROOP KUND but if we have to write it down-i am trying.

Travel: Reach HARIDWAR and then travel to KARAN PARYAG. You can also reach GWALDAM and then MANDOLI which comes VIA THRALI which is common between both stations. I prefer KARAN PARYAG side.

You have to halt at KARAN PARYAG. Next day start your journey for ANDOLI which will consume almost a day as you may be reaching around 2.0 PM

You can stay at MANDOLI or hire a jeep upto WAN. These days JEEPS are going to WAN.

Trek starts from there-climb a steady up to BEDNI BUGYAL. You have to have a guide for this trek-can not follow the trail all by yourself.

Next day start early from BEDNI and gradual climb for KALUA BINAYAK starts. Then you reach BHAGWA BASA-this should be in evening. So have rest and next day you can visit ROPP KUND. Come back and stay at BHAGWA BASA.

ADVICE: do not start retreat trek after 12.0
I have myself seen dramatic changes in weather-and you could be all alone and it could be fatal.

Retreat through same route-but you do have options here too. There is square in between...one route towatd "E" goes to KUMAON ( PINDARI GLACIER ) and towards "W" goes for SITEL from where you can round up for KUARI PASS and open up in AULI or TAPOBAN as you wish.

All this region is having active wildlife and it is very easy to miss the trail. You have to have full infrastructure.

Hi friends and experts!

I have some questions about the Roop Kund/Kuari Pass trek. My friends and I (3 or 4 people) plan to do it end October (24th onwards). Isn't it too late snow-wise and cold-wise? Pluses and minuses if we start from Mandoli? Auli/Tapoban? Maybe you can suggest contacts for a reliable guide and porters?
If you had to choose between this trek and Sikkim at this time of the year, what would you go for?

Thanks for your advice!

time a not good at all for a place like roopkund where u will go to an elevation of more than 5000m. the full-moon is on 16th Oct and locals say after that snow falling starts. if u people are experienced (at least moderately...have dome one 4500+ trek and several other treks) then its ok. unless thare is a chance that u will share the same fate as those whose skeletons are mystifying the high lake.

by the way...which trek in sikkim???? dzongri - goechala???

Babuchand, thanks a lot for replying! Never thought of the full moon in this way, but obviously the locals know the tricks of the local weather... Would the whole trek be under snow or just the Roop Kund part, starting from Bedni Bugyal upwards? Or all the treks in Uttaranchal? If it really happens, what would you suggest instead? We would like to spend approx.12 days trekking in the mountains.
Our group - 3 or 4 persons, all with some trekking experience (Peru, Chile, Alps), in Annapurna circle and Everest BC reaching over the 5 000m point. Sure there are better ways of enjoying the mountains than remaining in the company of the skeletons forever (touch wood!).
By the way, some sources mark Roop Kund at 4 450m (LP), others say something around 5020 m?

And yes - by Sikkim I meant the Gocha La trek. But I would prefer to see it in some time in spring when the rhododendrons are in blossom...
