We Went there in late October Last yr...

..and at that time we faced a lot of snow, After Kailoovinayak.
We pitched tent in Rani ki Surela, and in night the temperature dropped at -11 degree c... Darn cold..
We had to use ice axes at the last uphill.. After reaching Roopkund we tried to reach the Jorawar gali call.. but the entire ascent was covered with too much of snow at that point of time..and a darn blizzard kinda thing got all our plans and morals down in the drain..

As the other members have already stated, i also do think it is too early to go there in May.

I do have some pics of Roopkund.. can check that out..

Roopkund in May

Hi,

I agree that May is a bit early. I have recently postponed my trk to Roopkund from May to Sept. Moreover the constant rains in the north will not mak e trekking easy.

Plan well and then enjoy your trek.Good shoes are a MUST.

Cheers

HH

Excellent photos kalpurush! Especially the night sky from Bedni. Which camera did you use and what settings? Did you carry a tripod?

One question, what kind of shoes did you use for the upper part to traverse snow? Is ankle support in shoes necessary? If necessary, would the common woodland shoes with ankle support be alright or is it too heavy?

There are very few travelogues of successful Roopkund attempts on the net. If its not too much trouble can you please post a write up of your trek?

glad u like the pictures.. thanks. I carried a Fuji finepix S7000 digital camera with me, and I generally use it in Manual or aperture pririty mode . I used a tripod to get that particular night shot.

good shoes are a must, Ankle support does help. I went there with my Woodland Trekkers Shoe. We didn't have to face any hard ice though..

One more thing.. We met with a Bengali Guy in Bedni Bugyal, works for IFS.. he spends six months in there for his work.. according to him.. if you want to see the Bugiyals (Bedni & Ali) in their full glory.. u have to go there before the Raj JAt yatra.. that is before september.. ofcourse..

Just have to make up my mind to carry a tripod Let me see. I might go there this october, but not too sure.

Just a general question about shoes to everybody. Which is a better option?
1. Shoes with ankle support? OR
2. Normal shoes with gaiters?

Does anybody know where can i find gaiters?
