Yes.... I remember now. My guide was instructing me to hold the mobile in the direction of Gwaldam.

Hey IMers... Three of us are planning to do either Roopkund or Hampta Pass Trek in Last week of Sept/First Week of October ... Need some advice on which of two would be more manageable at this time of the year? I have very little experience (Bhrigu Lake, Triund and a failed attempt to reach Chandrataal due to excessive snow earlier this year) and my friend has done the basic mountaineering course ...can we pull off either of the trek and which one is more demanding?

Roopkund

Avioratorio,

Both treks are completely different though I've not done Hamta Pass but have been reading a lot about it. Yes, i did do Roopkund in May, 2009 which was quite some experience. You can read my experience about it here.

Hope you'll enjoy reading it and enrich from it to plan your trip!

Thanks.

Take a shared taxi to Kausani, if that is not available then go for taxi to Ranikhet, from there to Kausani and then to Gwaldam. If you get a direct taxi to Gwaldam then it will be best. From Gwaldam, you will get another taxi to Dewal and from there to Lohajung. Just keep on taking taxi to any of these major places, don’t take one that will drop you midway to any of these towns.

Another option is bus from Haldwani bus depot which starts at 6am and you should reach Lohajung by eve. Though as jituyadav suggested taxi's are faster but might work out slightly more expensive.

thnx a lot jitu amar and dilliwala.

but the problem is, I shall reach haldwani/kathgodam not b4 9 am. (bagh express from howrah). which is I think a big late to catch a direct bus to lohajung. keeping in the mind of kausani and ranikhet... which is the best destination I should try for.
Can I reach loharjung in a single day ?

my suggestion would be to take amritsar mail from kolkata, getting down at moradabad and switch to ranikhet express to haldwani. taking bagh express possibly would make sure that you end up spending the entire day in haldwani/kathgodam. secondly, the major roadhead is haldwani, and if ranikhet express drops you at haldwani around 5:30am, you might as well get the bus to dewal.

Grab the first transport you get, jeep or bus, for Kausani or Almora. If neither is available, then head for Ranikhet.

Good suggestion by trek trek. Unfortunately non of the tickets are available on 7th and 8th. Alternatively, A Mail on 7th upto Lucknow and from there Naini Express on 8th upto Lal Kuan.

Actually, Almora should be avoided now as the road is closed and the vehicles are coming via Ramgarh and Ranikhet. Via Ramgarh, it takes a long time to reach Almora and then again, one has to travel about 10 Kms towards Ranikhet, which is unnecessary. All this can be avoided by going to Ranikhet and then to Kausani.
