But I am glad you had a good time. Any tids bits of information that I can add to my blog, do pass it on. That goes for Saikat too.

Arjun: The locals seem to think the climb from Wan to Bedni is better than via Didana, particulary, after heavy rains. We were planning to return via Didana but were told that the trail there is more slushy & risky, for a downhill climb. Want to also mention that the WAN GMVN-TRH location and its setting, is pretty awesome! Has a nice garden & lawn!! One can see Ali Bugyal green top & tree-line, from Wan-TRH lawns.

Look forward to a similar "classy" blog on Rupin Pass from you.

I can now appreciate your suggestion for Didana-Ali Bugyal trek. A pleasant surprise awaits the trekkers when they complete the last step of the climb out of the dense forest and suddenly they see a vast expanse of bugyal. This picture will explain. The climb from Didana, I guess, is from the left-centre of the picture.

actually, it's a bittersweet feeling. You climb out of the forest, and see the bugyal's ridgeline only 20 mts up. Wonderful. then you climb a bit more and see that there's another ridgeline that you couldn't see earlier, another 50 mts up. Then you climb a bit more, etc. The ridgeline at Ali Bugyal is like a horizon, and as we climbed up to meet it, we found remnants of severeley gnashed teeth from past trekking parties in between the tufts of grass.

While the climb out of Didana is wonderful, we found the forest on our Wan return route to be a lot prettier than the one we had seen climbing out of Didana. So a good tactic would be to ascend via Didana and descend via Wan.
But yes, the Didana route is steeper for longer, and therefore more problematic in the rains. The route that we went on was in fact a shortcut from Didana to Ali, and not the mule track. It was, I suppose, that much steeper and slushier therefore.

Nice pic, SK. Seems both of you had a good time on the trek. Looking forward for some interesting stories during our Mumbai meet up.

My Roopkund Trek Pictures

I have finally managed to prune my Roopkund pictures down to Only 217 and titled them all!

If you have interest, patience & broadband see them (as slideshow or selectively) at Flickr:

Note to SK: If you notice any mistakes in my titles/captions, do let me know. (PS: Some spelling mistakes are still there, I will correct those)

KS,
All pictures have come out excellent. The pictures by DSLR are superb. As you said, LCD displays are a shade lighter than the actual pictures.

In some cases, specific titles need to be given instead of the genralised ones. I will talk to you during our IM meet ups.

Solo_Trekker, Why do you ask about him? do you know Sandipan??

Apart from what I already said [viz: Sandipan Bandhopadhyay (A solo, Bengali trekker from ASSAM) tried for Rookund on 19th June and reached past many Glaciers, but finally gave up, as he found himself sinking in watery depths of melting glacier.] We dont have much more details of him.

Sadanand and I met him on 20th June, around 8:00AM, somewhere near the saddle i.e. half-way between Bedni Bugyal & Pathar Nachani. He was alone and going down towards Bedni. We stopped him and asked about conditions in Roopkund. He said it was a bit dangerous, as the top layers on the last few glaciers were thin and melting and a foot placed hard, carelessly could lead to fast flowing water underneath. He said he tried his best to go to the Frozen Lake, particularly since he was near the end! But then he gaveup, deciding it was not worth risking life.

We already knew (from the Ukranian Girl), that weather conditions in Bhagubasa & Roopkund) on 19th June (when Sandipan was also trying), was pretty bad and cold. So I think, Sandipan did well to turn back.

Yeah I used some "broad" general title in a few range of pictures ... I need to correct that.

I think his name was Sandipan Bhattacharjee and he was from Silchar (Assam). He said that after completion of his trek to Roopkund, he was to go for Kedartal trek but due to early onset of monsoon, he has dropped the idea.

Hi KS / SK
Have seen your photographs. It's very nice and seen both of you in pics. Few last photographs are really breathtaking. It was very slippery I suppose. How did you manage without axe. What's the exact distance from Wan to Bedni. I have already decided to go there next year.

Somnath, Yes, Roopkund is certainly a must-do!... knowing the best month to do it is debateable. Our guide, Debu, did carry (and used) his ice-axe, and went ahead of us on the Roopkund snow slopes. Distance from Wan to Bedni is 11-12Kms - KS
