Use Google Earth for that
KS has done some placemarks for Roopkund ;here is the link of the kmz files; follow the same for onward trek Homkund-Ronti. http://kothanda.srinivasan.googlepag...roopkund03.kmz You can also use maps.google.com;login with gmail id;and add Path Profiler which is 3rd parth tool for Altitude Graphs; works great. Check here http://www.heywhatsthat.com/ You need to spend some time on it. Quote:

Dear Suprotim,
We (Aloke, me & one of our friend from Hrishikesh) are planning to do Roopkund in early September. Actually was earlier planning to go in June 1st week but couldn't make it out due to schedules. Actually we are looking at early Sep window as latter half of Sep is likely to hv snow above Bagubasha. That's what the record of the last 2 years & the suggestions of Aces like KS, chits, Ashu, Arjun. It's better to plan the trek in early Sep I feel. |

I agree mid-Sep onward is jittery seeing the last two year pattern (remember those Kalindi Mishap also happen in those period).
I suggest to keep fingers crossed , have train booking etc and then see what happen in that period. If possible plan in early Sep Quote:

Yah, I have all these in my mind
, but as you know, being in IT sector and taking a leave of about 15 days in near to leave the job , so we are trying to avail the Durga Puja holidays.You are right, for past few years in September end weather faltered massively and trekkers faced many casualties too. So keeping that in mind, we will take decisions as per the weather and snow condition. Lets hope for the best . |

Hi! Supratim.......this is Pintu from KOLKATA (SOVABAZAR)....last year we went to ROOPKUND in the second week of October....had snow after Baguabasa...at ROOPKUND it was knee-deep snow....I, myself tried to cross Jianara Gali Pass but couldn't able to do so for inclement weather....one thing I want to enlight that nobody usually give that in that certain period of time i.e. (Late Sept-Oct) the bugiyals become no longer green...as it turns brownish so u can check the WAN TO BEDINI BUGIYAL path....hence u can save one day and at least 10 Kms....
And there is not huge difference as far as beauty is concerned in between B.Bugiyal & A.Bugiyal...overall to me B.Bugiyal is far better than A.Bugiyal in that period of time i.e. (Late Sept-Oct)...I think I have written a lot...& u may feel bored...now I should clear my intention that I was also keen to make it upto Ronty Saddle but devoid of company...I had to leave after ROOPKUND...now I know this year u are going upto Ronty Saddle, so may I request u to make an arrangement for me in your team...I will definitely in touch with u in this thread & looking for an assertive reply from u....... |

Thank you! Arindam...I am very much keen for this trek from last year...would be in heaven if I can complete it with all of u...
But I have some queries about the itinerary given by Supratim:- 1. Can't we start by 24/09/09 by Kalka Mail...then one night will be added to our tour...Howrah > Delhi(20-40 p.m.) > Ranikhet Express(22-35 p.m.) > Kathgodam(05-45 p.m.)....from Kathgodam we can go easily upto Gwaldam if we can hire private vehicle according to our pocket & then it will drop us at late afternoon (Breakfast & Lunch to be taken on the way)...I am telling it bcoz the road in Kumaon side is better than Garhwal side & it is less congested & moreover the greenary as-well-as scenarios is far better than Garhwal side. 2. We can start our trek from Wan village as nowdays hired private vehicles & local jeeps ply between Dewal > Mundoli > Lohajung > Wan....(Only last a few kms. would be bumpy ride)....& there has a GMVN Guest House at Wan ........there is nothing worth in walking through dense forest of Didna....in that course we can save another day in our tour bcoz like u people I am also an employee from Private Sector & I have to get back to Kolkata on or before 09th October...otherwise it won't be fruitful from my prospective. 3. We don't need to carry ample amount of cooking items as I saw that most of the essential things easily be brought at Gwaldam or Dewal....so making heavier our backpacks from Kolkata is not necessary. Looking forward an early reply from your end................... |

@pintu
Hi, we will be glad if you can join our team. Starting date is a bit fixed, as many of us has some problems starting on 24th night. Send me your phone number to roy(dot)supratim05(at)gmail(do t)com and I will call you to discuss the things and clear our views. @manas Are you a first timer to himalayan trekking?? If yes then Roopkund for first time is going to be a bit tough for you. Anyway, mention your mail id and I will try to clear the schedules and other things to you. |
