Hi Guys,
I've heard rumours that there are some wicked big walls around Manali. Is this true and who has climbed there? Are there any climbing clubs in India that hire out trad gear? My partner and I are hesitatant to bring climbing gear with us as this won't be a climbing specific trip and we don't want to lug ridiculous amounts of gear around with us. Any suggestions would be most helpful... Cheers, D |

HI Dancer
there are some rock walls in Manali which are mostly used by DMAS ,u can try them. there are few in Solag Vally near Manali too ...... u can also contact DMAS if u need details information As for the equipment DMAS and few private institute hire out gears but mostly they are for ice so check them out before coming .....and i will still suggest u to bring the technical equipment (pitons ,nuts, friends etc ) with you. Rope and biners wont be a problem to hire..... ![]()

Okay, inside info, there is a german guy who does Bolder climbing as far as Bordering Spiti, if you are in Manali ask for Nitin at the travel office above Chopstickes on the mall.

Hi,
I'd like to know your definition of 'big walls'. AFAIK, i've done my course in DMAS and seen nothing big. There is definitely some bouldering and short routes about 50-100mtrs max, but nothing bigger. I wont be surprised to know if Bangalore has got bigger routes than the manali area. farther afield, try looking at the Miyar valley, there are reports of Italians doing some good routes there (more alpine types than rock climbing) . For easier access, there are lots of walls ( my guess is atleast 300mtrs or more) between gangotri and gaumukh in uttaranchal. Its a 1-2 day trek from the roadhead, and I've reports of climbs done here in the early 90s. Do get all the gear you need, you might be able to rent alpine/mountaineering gear in manali, but that would be the basic ice axes and crampons, not too much technical gear . |

DMAS do not hire out-if you have personal contacts and can pay advance security cheque...then it is fine.
There are no routes in MANALI area which is of 300m length. Leave alone 300m- I have not seen 100m long route...in my three training there ! |
