Info on Leh

Hi All,
I am writing from London, my son is exploring india by motorcycle and was staying in a houseboat in Ladakh he has dropped off the radar. No calls and no emails, are the telephone lines working? i assume that since you are able to post messages something must be working? any info on conditions there would be great

Hi
Thx for the response - he was having his bike fixed and then going to Manali and then to Delhi. He called early last week and since then i have not heard from him and neither has his girlfriend (he always keeps in touch with her) he was travelling with an American girl and some other bikers non of whom would have my contact details. I hope i am worrying needlessly. Have the floods on the news affected that area??

Hi,

If he they all were travelling from Leh to Manali on bikes, there is a good possibility that they would be on the way. A lot of people take detours to some lakes on the way back from Leh to Manali. Also in the last few weeks there have been road blockages on the Manali Leh Highway. They could be stuck somewhere there. The road is now operational for jeeps, but still once in a while landslides do happen and the road gets blocked again. Most importantly there is little or no means of communications on most part of this highway.
Keep posting any more details that you have on this forum, and i'm sure people would reply to you.
I would be leaving for Leh from Manali in the next few days. If there is no word till then, give me details and i'll look out on the way.

Regards
Styler.

Hi,
as mentioned, the houseboat was in Srinagar which is in Kashmir, not Ladakh. In Srinagar there are a lot of parties going on and the Tel Connections might be cut off at times.
More important, when did he actually start the trip in Delhi? (If he started the trip a few days before he called, he went the loop clock-wise, which makes sense due to altitude adjustment- it is 3 days stiff riding Delhi to Srinagar-.) The other way takes approx. 7-8 days stiff riding & no parties to get to Srinagar..... Any idea which direction he was heading?
If he was heading from Srinagar to Leh (Ladakh)and further to Manali, then most likely he will not be able to call for some days ( or weeks even), due to the distroyed Tel Comm Infrastructure and distroyed roads. Further, if they would visit side valleys or a lot of monastry's which have been cut off from road or communication, it might take him even two weeks to get back to civilisation or get connected again. And to make it worse, if the bike broke down in the middle of nowhere - and the bikes rented or bought from Karol Bagh/Delhi do break down, then it could take him a hell of a lot of time to get back to you.
Bottomline: Do not be overworried as of now. Give him another week or even longer, then start worrying again. Most of Ladakh is a high altitude desert, bad roads that might have washed off, no Phone, no Internet Cafe, nothing, except Yaks n monks.....it might take him a hell of a lot of time to get back!
FYI, I am writing this from an airconditioned environment of my office - no comparison with the world up there, and we just made it before the rains started!
Feel free to contact me if further questions and don't worry!
Cheers,

I guess he should be all fine, given he is not alone the chances are he must have gone somewhere offtrack, to explore some areas.
But he should be all fine. Give him some time as everyone said

See, all resolves..... Shanti, Shanti....
Is he now going towards Delhi or towards Leh? For the forthcoming days / weeks take into account that communication or anything you want to achieve, it takes time - a lot of time...
If you need further info, let us know.
In turn, surely the forum is eager to learn about road condition up there, so stay tuned and report if possible...
Cheers,
Volker

Tso Moriri - road condtions?

Does anyone know about current road conditions between Tso Kar and Tso-Moriri, and from Tso Moriri on to Leh via Mahe Bridge?

I'm travelling next week and a couple of people have told me that the roads / bridge are out but agents I've called in Manali and Leh say that things are ok.

Thanks......

Just back from Leh after our trip. Amazing weather there. Roads are bumpy but its not a big deal for people going by Bus or Taxi. I would advice to go by taxi tho cuz one of the buses got its axle broken in the slush. We did find snow on Khardungla and also on our way to Pangong.

kinky here are the no.s Sorry for the delay. Just came back from HEaven

Hi all,

The latest updates of the road on 6th Sept 2006

The Road from Manali to Leh is open and traffic running.
After the rains the road is badly damaged and bad to non-existant from rohtang to Sarchu.

The 260 kms from Manali to Sarchu would take 10-12 hrs at least

One more useful information.
Hutch - Idea Postpaid phones now work in Leh now - on roaming through the Airtel Network.
