Rishikesh to Binsar Transport

Can anyone advise on transport availability from Rishikish to Binsar?
also would appreciate recommended reading and what are the best maps of this area for trekking. We will be there around the 22 April.

Hi
I can think of two options:
Suggestion#1
First take a train from Dehradun to Kathgodam( 9-10 hours)and then a bus/jeep to Binsar via Almora( 5 hours)

From Rishikesh take a vehicle( bus/jeep) First go to Karan Prayag along the national highway and then take the divertion to Gwaldam, Bageswar and onto Binsar.

If you want to Almora the first option is better, I think. Let other IMers weigh the merits of these two routes.

Route no. 2 described by "rajkumar" above is certainly more scenic.

The Survey of India has good trekking maps of Garhwal and Kumaon; as part of their trekking map series; you may buy these at their office in New Delhi, near Connaught Place; or at their H.Q. at Dehradun if you're passing through Doon.

The route no.2 suggested by Rajkumar would be nice. you may go to Binsar spending some days in beautiful places like Gwaldam, Kausani ,Chowkori etc.

Folks,
There are two Binsar. Which is the one you want to go?

The is one in Garhwal in Pauri District. Its famous for teh Binsar Devta Temple..

The other in Kumaon is the scenic one.. In cae you are looking for teh second Binsar, then being in rishikesh, the second option suggested by Rajkumar is a better option..

We did this journey in reverse a few years ago (Almora to Rishikesh).

We took a week or more by local bus, stopping overnight at Rudraprayag, Devaprayag, Gwaldam and Kausani. Hiring jeeps would be a quicker option if you're pushed for time. You could probably do it in 2-3 days.

It's a bit off the beaten track and I can't remember seeing another foreign tourist for the whole week. Great mountain scenery all the way!

Thanks for all the great advice re maps and route option 2 is the way we will take .We have 14days after leaving Delhi so hopefully it won't be too rushed as I would rather see just one part of India and see it properly.Thanks for the slide show Allan D,sure great memories.
We will post our impressions on our return from Europe England scotland and Canada in 5 months of treking.

I think we are talking about BINSAR SANCTUARY near Almora and route is also good as you all have suggested. Prior booking is required at GMVN tourist banglow which can be done online also and one private resort is also there-should be costlier than GMVN.

Great views from KASAUNI and BINSAR.

I think the route from Karnprayag, Gwaldam and Bageshwar would be the best option. It's not a national highway, and offers the best views. Do this sort of 'back road'.

I did Binsar to Khirsu (near Pauri) in 12 hours by motorcycle. I guess it'd take an hour or so more from Rishikesh. No point going back to Kathgodam. For the map, try any of the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) or Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) guest houses. You'll get a good map of Uttaranchal for about Rs 75.

We are now packed and ready to leave next Sunday for Delhi . I would like to thank everyone for their help with our trip to Binsar.
Would appreciate any weather reports from these areas.

The weather in Binsar was quite pleasant a couple weeks ago when I was in the area -- cool nights, generally pleasant most days, rhododendron in full bloom. The picture is from the Binsar tower (in the sanctuary) looking down to (what I believe) is the spectacularly-sited govt-run accommodation. The mountains generally visible in the mornings but were often obscured by clouds in the afternoon.
