Question Regarding Gaumukh-Tapovan–Kedarnath-Madhyamaheshwar trek

Hi,
I am a new member over here.

I have planned for a Gomukh - Tapovan trek on 2nd week of October this year. After that I want to trek Kedarnath and Madmaheswar.
This is my first trek so that is it possible or hectic?
Please send me your valuable advice.

Well whether it is hectic or not depends on how much time you have kept for these... On all these treks you can break your journey and manage to keep it less hectic.

I would recommend following starting from Gangotri

Day 1 - Gangotri - Bhojbasa (14 kms or so) ; if you feel tired there are some acco in Chirbaas. Also if you find this hectic then you better reasses your plans and drop one of the places
Day 2 Bhojbasa to Tapovan
Day 3 Tapovan - to Bjohbasa / Chirbasa - most people manage to get to Gangotri also
Day 4 Rest in Gangotri/ Reserve day
Day 5 Move to Gaurikund
Day 6 Gaurikund to Kedarnath (if you had trouble in doing Gangotri Bhojbasa then this will again be tough but if you did that then you can easily reach Kedarnath)
Day 7 Explore Kedarnath surrondings (a few short treks)
Day 8 Return to Gaurikund and move towards Guptakashi/Kalimath or Ransi
Day 9 Ransi to Gaundhar
DAy 10 Gaundhar to Madhmaheshwar
Day 11 Madh to Budha Madh, back and reach Gaundhar
Day 12 Gaundhar to Ransi
Day 13 Reserve day

Add to this 2 days from HDW to Gangotri and 2 days return. So if you have around 16-17 days you can easily do this (assuming basic fitness levels) Also you can always test yourself on the Gangotri Bhojbasa sector and if it takes you 2 days to do this, then you better drop Madhmaheshwar.

Hope this helps

Thaks a lot Friends,
But I have another question ...

What would be better option - rent a car for entire tour or rent a car for share basis as and when required?

I shall be highly grateful if you provide me some approximate rate of car rent.

Rent a car for the entire trip is a waste of money. You will get hired taxi everywhere. Beyond Gangotri no usage, beyond Gourikund no usage, beyon Uniana no usage. Only waiting charges.

gomukh-tapovan-kedarnath trek

We are also planning for a gomukh-tapovan-kedarnath trek. This will be our very first trek. Our plan is to reach Gangotri on 3rd of October and start our trek from there on 4th. We have to be back to Haridwar latest by 12th evening.
We are two in numbers and have no idea about the guide/porter. Is it a must to take guide/porter? Can someone provide any idea about the approximate charges for guide/porter?
We intend to travel in a group, will it be possible to join some group there?
Will it be possible for firts time trekkers to trek to kedarnath via vasukitaal and nandanvan?
We are flexible about the starting point of the trek. It can be either from Gaurikund or from Gangotri.

No need for guide in this treak. You will see thousand of people going to Gomukh/Kedarnath. As it is your first trek, it is advisable not to venture more. You can go upto Tapovan via Gomukh. Somnath, one of the senior IM member is going to Tapovan this year. You can check with his thread.

Cool First Time Trekker - Need help on Gaumukh-Tapovan-Kedarnath Trek

Hi All,
I'm a new member of this forum but I've been a reader of this forum for long. All the posts have really helped me in getting the info I needed

I'm planning a trekking trip with my husband and this will be our very first one am

Our plan goes as follows:

1st October - Cal Rajdhani To Delhi

2nd October - New Delhi to Haridwar by Janashatabdi and then to Rishikesh by local transport, overnight at Rishikesh

3rd October - Early morning start for Uttarkashi, getting the permit there and lunch.Post lunch travel to Gangotri and overnight at Gangotri.

4th October - Gangotri to Bhojwasa, Overnight at Bhojwasa

5th October - Bhojwasa to Gomukh and then to tapovan, overnight at Tapovan

6th October - Tapovan to Neelatal and back to bhojwasa/ Gangotri (Will we be able to make to gangotri on the same day?)

7th October - Gangotri to Gaurikund and overnight at Gaurikund

8th October - Gaurikund to Kedar and overnight at Kedar

9th October - kedarnath to vasukitaal and Back to kedarnath for overnight stay

10th October - Kedarnath to gaurikund and to rudraprayag

11th October - Rudraprayag to Rishikesh/Haridwar

12th October - Haridwar to Delhi (Preferrably by Janashatabdi) and then return flight/train to kolkata on same day.

How good is this itinerary? can we cover all these places? any suggested itinerary?

We want to join a group also for the trek to tapovan but it seems that no one is travelling on the same day. Will it be better to do the Kedarnath part first and then go for the Gangotri trip ( As I saw that some of u ppl r starting for gangotri 3-4 days after our planned start date.)?

What are the equipments we will need to have??
Please help........

Hi Ananya,

I would like to ask you to pay some attention on the below mentioned points, don't take it otherwise :

1. The trip is quite heavy for a first timer, but still possible, rather I like to encourage peoples who are going to start their career as a trekker , what I will suggest is to slower down your pace .

2. You should keep at least 1 extra day for acclimatization in Gangotri. Don't waste the full day, you can go upto Pandu Gufa (1.5 km from Gangotri, nice view of Sudarshan peak), that will help you to acclimatize better.

3. Reaching Gangotri from Tapovan is possible but I will say no as another part of your trekking is still remaining and your knees will not permit you that much. You can break it in Tapovan to Chirbasa (have to stay at your own tent, as no accommodation is now available at Chidbasa) and Chidbasa to Gangotri.

4. If you are going to book private car, then you can reach Hrishikesh -> Gangotri at a stretch, but if it is by Bus or share Jeep, then it may become difficult and strenuous, in that case you can break it in Hrishikesh -> Uttarkashi and Uttarkashi -> Gangotri. By the way, arranging for the permits in Uttarkashi will also require a good time.
Again going Gourikund from Gangotri directly is very very strenuous, you can break it like Gangotri -> Rudraprayag and Rudraprayag -> Gourikund. What I will suggest is Tapovan -> Chidbasa (stay), Chidbasa -> Gangotri -> Uttarkashi (stay), Uttarkashi -> Rudraprayag -> Gaurikund.
But still, while going to trekking, these kind of exhaustive journeys should always be avoided. So in my opinion you should keep 1 more day for transportation purpose. There may be road block due to work or landslide also .

Other parts of your schedules seems ok to me.

Happy trekking.

Thanks Dilliwala for your edit. I think I did a mess while trying to do this. How to do this in future?

Supratim - I suggest one change in medicine list, Lomotil instead of Metrogyl (dysentery). It is very effective especially at high altitude
